There's a block-by-default setup for new email servers. You have to go through the reputation-building process which is not at all clear nor is it always guaranteed to work.

Yes, it "works" for most people, but it also has the effect of entrenching the incumbent large email providers and preventing more independent providers from cropping up.

The current method is very lazy and collectively punishes a lot of innocent email providers for the crimes of the abusers.

Exactly.

It destroys competition.

GMail is the worst for email blocking resolutions. They don't have an effective feedback loop built into their system. So when a user does block you, no one is told about it, to be fixed. Therefore lowering your reputation with them over time.

How can we as ESPs respond to them appropriately with removal of these people who don't want our emails anymore, if we don't know who the user is?

If there are any GMAIL service team members here, I would LOVE to know why a feedback loop was never implemented like the other providers.

spoiledtechie commented on What happens to all the dead electric-car batteries?   sciencemag.org/news/2021/... · Posted by u/rbanffy

I tell you what happens, like other electrical components:

1. Batteries ripped out of cars

2. Sold to "unscrupulous" scrap dealers

3. Put on boats to Phillipines or West Africa

4. Crushed and pounded with a rock by a 10 year old child, then burned in a rudimentary smelter to separate metals from plastics.

5. Extracted metals bought by middlemen

6. Metals certified as being safely mined/sourced

7. Re-manufactured into a car battery

Battery powered cars are going to be the next disaster, after the fibre glass disposal scandal of wind farms.

I'll keep my very efficient Audi diesel car (79g/km CO2) for now thanks.

This is maybe a bit too personal, but unfortunately I am not allowed to leave my country if I go back because of my mandatory military duty, the one which I do not plan to waste 2 years of my life on.

I miss my family and the city in general, our orchard and the foodporn-quality fruits such as peaches with skin that peels just like butter, sometimes I just question if it is all worth it. And probably is, but it feels definitely unfair to have to choose A or B, not a mix.

spoiledtechie · 5 years ago
That country probably gave you the opportunity you have now. You might not think its worth 2 years, but the country does and everyone else in that country also did.

You should really think about going back and serving a country which gave you opportunities.

Isn't this situational irony ? reporters covering the events that were a result of unreasonable police actions themselves were subject to the unreasonable actions of the police.
spoiledtechie · 5 years ago
I wouldn't call it unreasonable. They were told to clear the streets. They didn't actually clear the street. They stayed on the street. Reporters not following directions.

Not an argument for this site I guess. But this is what happens when you have political leaders picking sides in violence. Trump literally tweeted "when the looting starts the shooting starts" (not before this event, of course -- it's an example). You think rhetoric like that doesn't have the effect of empowering police to abuse their power against people they don't like?
spoiledtechie · 5 years ago
Police abuse their power when leaders pick sides? And what about the Mayor? Has he not chosen sides? He lambasted the riots, but has allowed it to continue. Actions and words.

As someone who tries to find good sources news, I loathe Fox, CNN, and MSNBC. I find NPR, Reuters, Al Jazeera, The Intercept and various independent localized publications (e.g. LA Times, Voice of San Diego) much better.

Some of those are left leaning (esp. The Intercept), but NPR is somewhat center right so I think it is a fair balance.

The problem with mass media organizations, particularly those that are geared toward television, is that they prioritize entertainment over actual investigative journalism. In doing so they become nearly useless, often offering only a knee jerk response to a carefully curated subset of current events. They do not offer any unique or engaging perspective on the issues they cover, and they fail to report on important details and stories.

While the first half kind of threw me, your second half lined up with what I see. Im quite surprised you believe and state it more than once that NPR is right of center. Just recently their CEO wrote a book about how LEFT leaning they were and how bad he was. He realized that he needed to venture out and how bad NPR was.

A long time ago I gifted my parents one of the early mid-tier Roombas that had beacons that you can place to avoid certain areas. I bought the Roomba plus several sets of beacons.

They were really excited to use it. We put beacons all around the house and then activated the Roomba on the hardwood floor near an obvious pile of dust in the middle of the living room. I figured that would be the Hello World test.

After about 10 minutes of watching it randomly bump into walls, get jammed under the couch, we started to get disappointed. But then it made a direct path towards the dust. We all got excited and then watched it simply go right over the dust without picking up anything. At that point I picked up the unit and kept restarting it over and over until it would pick up the dust.

We tried it on maybe two other occasions and it would just continuously get stuck within a few minutes (usually either between piano legs or under furniture that was raised about the same height as the vacuum). They re-gifted it back to me where it sat unused until I finally gave it away for free. That was well over a decade ago and I now realize that I had unrealistic expectations and possibly didn't give it a fair chance.

Have they improved much since then? My home has lots of hardwood floors throughout and I vacuum daily. Even though there's central vac access everywhere I prefer to use a Miele canister vacuum.

Yes. I own a current generation roomba and they pick up immense amount of dust from my house every 2 days. It works.
