sobjornstad commented on Another GitHub outage in the same day   githubstatus.com/incident... · Posted by u/Nezteb

Can someone in GitHub senior leadership please start paying attention and reprioritise towards actually delivering a product that's at least relatively reliable?

I moved my company over to GH enterprise last year (from AzDO) and I'm considering moving us away to another vendor altogether as a result of the constant partial outages. Things that used to "just work" now are slow in the UI, and GH actions fail to schedule in a reasonable timeframe way more than they ever used to. I enjoy GH copilot as much as the next person, but ultimately I came to GH because I needed a git forge, and I will leave GH if the git forge doesn't work.

I second this. GitHub used to be a fantastic product. Now it barely even works. Even basic functionality like the timeline updating when I push commits is unreliable. The other day I opened a PR diff (not even a particularly large one) and it took fully 15 seconds after the page visually finished loading -- on a $2,000 dev machine -- before any UI elements became clickable. This happened repeatedly.

It is fairly stunning to me that we've come to accept this level of non-functional software as normal.

To be fair, I don't think "Slugulus Eructo" (the name) is actually in the books. This is what's in my copy:

> The smug look on Malfoy’s face flickered.

> “No one asked your opinion, you filthy little Mudblood,” he spat.

> Harry knew at once that Malfoy had said something really bad because there was an instant uproar at his words. Flint had to dive in front of Malfoy to stop Fred and George jumping on him, Alicia shrieked, “How dare you!”, and Ron plunged his hand into his robes, pulled out his wand, yelling, “You’ll pay for that one, Malfoy!” and pointed it furiously under Flint’s arm at Malfoy’s face.

> A loud bang echoed around the stadium and a jet of green light shot out of the wrong end of Ron’s wand, hitting him in the stomach and sending him reeling backward onto the grass.

> “Ron! Ron! Are you all right?” squealed Hermione.

> Ron opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. Instead he gave an almighty belch and several slugs dribbled out of his mouth onto his lap.

I have a vague recollection that it might come up named as such in Half-Blood Prince, written in Snape's old potions textbook?

In support of that hypothesis, the Fandom site lists it as “mentioned” in Half-Blood Prince, but it says nothing else and I'm traveling and don't have a copy to check, so not sure.

My favorite bug is when I spend 5 minutes writing something and send it, then something breaks and refreshes, deleting the whole thing. Like, thanks, much appreciated, please waste more of my time.
sobjornstad · 6 days ago
Literally every time if I press the "stop" button while it's writing back for the first conversation turn because I notice I forgot something and want to correct it, my prompt is lost.

Anytime I run into a bug like this, part of me wants to go calculate how much of humanity's collective time has been wasted by one company not fixing a trivial bug. It's got to be a lot.

True. Though the difference with smart watches is that they tend to be significantly bigger in size than what common watches used to be like.

Smart "bands" tend to be less perceptible.

Surprisingly, I find the Apple Watch significantly more comfortable and less perceptible than any other watch I've worn in the past. My theory is it's the contoured back for the heart rate monitor, etc. But maybe I'm just weird.

Yes, me too.

It seems to be a thing with practicing motion sequences.

I've noticed the same thing with rote memory tasks like lines of poetry, so I think it might be a more general thing involving the memory consolidation properties of sleep, maybe particularly focused on fluency/speed rather than mere ability to recall.

Those radar speed limit signs that blink at what seems like 50 times a second if you go 36 in a 35 zone are very annoying. To be fair the blink threshold must be configurable, but whoever installed them around here didn't have any common sense and set them all to the speed limit exactly.
sobjornstad · 3 months ago
I also hate the ones that are exactly at the spot where the speed limit changes and still flash you aggressively in the distance. Yeah, I'm going faster than 35 because the speed limit is 55 where I am and I'm still slowing down.

How is it even possible to hold breath for 11 minutes? I tried it last week (to avoid inhaling insecticide fumes) and could manage about a minute after trying very hard.

Being underwater does make it significantly easier, though the effect is fairly moderate in most humans: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diving_reflex

Americans don't realize that a lot of other airports around the world let you connect to other international flights without having to pass through immigration and customs. The USA is really backwards in that respect.
sobjornstad · 3 years ago
...Which is amusingly because the US is less strict at immigration/customs than most other countries. Since it lacks any exit controls, there's no need to segregate the international departures section of the airport, which has the side effect of meaning you have to enter the US to get to your connecting flight.
sobjornstad commented on Why are D-sharp and E-flat considered to be two different notes?   ethanhein.com/wp/2022/why... · Posted by u/tobr

Also as long as sharps and flats are written in a very pedantic manner. For example a diminished C chord only sounds "right" if it's notated as C-E♭-G♭-B♭♭ rather than C-E♭-G♭-A.

On top of this, harmony may or may not work the same in 19-TET and 12-TET. With the same example of diminished chords, the diminished chord does not divide the octave in four equal parts in 19-TET. Adim and Cdim are enharmonic in 12-TET, but Adim in 19-TET is A-C-E♭-G♭♭; that is, only C and E♭ are the same.

sobjornstad · 3 years ago
Wait, how do you play B♭♭ differently than A on the 19-TET keyboard? There isn't a separate key for that is there?
