The thing that amazes me is how they've rolled out such a buggy change at such a scale. I would assume that for such critical systems, there would be a gradual rollout policy, so that not everything goes down at once.

HN should take down this post. The country has been heavily polarized into two sections (pro-bjp and against-bjp) with both the sections heavily incentivised by the "IT" deptt of respective political parties. Very few will talk about the actual issue and most of the comments will be rhetorical, only focusing on what they believe is right.

The problem with this approach is, if there are 10 such different cases, which can be made a one-liner, the dev would instead make those 10 cases to 20, while waiting for 3rd to come in either of them. Instead of being afraid of future, do some abstraction. If a 3rd case is massively different, then based on the timeline either modify the abstraction, or create a new-functionality.

Wait, did I miss something? Wasn't it google who started the "vendor everything" philosophy in the first place?

So? What's wrong with this? Why would someone check-in all the 3rd party code, when same can be described in package.json & downloaded again.

Wrt to the title, I would like to add here that: We can fix bugs, even after something is finished!

Same cannot be said for other professions like Civil Engineering, Doctors etc.

Very cool. Anyone has ideas on how this data can be used, what kind of applications can be built with this?

Hi, I just build a small Android app using the rover-photo APIs: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siddharths...

Hatred for Microsoft? I have none. I do hate the fact that we have an absolutely free operating system that works just fine but thanks to Bill Gates 90s shenanigans and aggressive and illegal market and business tactics we're stuck with a proprietary system that is totally unnecessary and as it continues that system becomes more and more invasive. And that system is a black box that you can't trust.

Google started engineering features that were supposedly opt-in but they were so convenient that most people opted in anyway. Google forced people to divulge their data, for instance location, for navigation. It did not actually need the level of data it collects to provide navigation, it was just a way to steal their location privacy to increase its marketing reach and to improve the service not necessarily for the user but for its own business needs. How long before Microsoft starts employing the same tactics. You know you have a choice but it's a totally false choice!

> that works just fine

Are you kidding me? If you're a full-stack developer, then try opening Android Studio & PyCharm IDE at the same time, and after approx. 1 hour, things just get horrible. Everything is stuck. I don't know exactly what is happening, but somewhere the Swap handling horrible wrong.

No such issues on Mac OS/Windows :/
