The terminal client program named "x3270 emulator"?
shrubble · a day ago
Yes on my Debian derived Linux, the packages are

x3270 for X11 based (it has buttons to click to send PF keys etc.)

c3270 for curses-based (terminal)

tcl3270 for using TCL to script interactions with a 3270 session

s3270 for some other form of scripting 3270 sessions

These people don’t have an SSN. You can’t pay taxes without one
shrubble · a day ago
There’s plenty of cases where illegal aliens are using the SSN of someone else, as reported by NYT, WashPost etc.

The big question is “whose jobs”?

If it’s federal government employment that is dropping, or illegal alien jobs dropping, then some will view it positively (I’ve seen this perspective advanced on x.com).

Reminder that the X11 based x3270 client can be used to communicate with mainframes, including the "Hercules" IBM mainframe emulator that you can run on Linux/Windows/MacOS .

He met with moot ("he is sensitive, be gentile", search on jmail), and within a few days the /pol/ board got created, starting a culture war in the US, leading to Trump getting elected president. Absolutely nuts.
shrubble · 4 days ago
I don’t agree with this analysis.

The reason I don’t agree is that moot banned any Gamergate discussion and those people then went to 8chan, a site which moot had no control over.

And it was Gamergate that put some fuel on the fire which (IMHO) increased support for Trump. The 8chan site grew a great deal from it, then continued from that first initial “win”.

I’m aware of two large telecom companies that use Perl extensively, but in-house and internal services only. They don’t have anything “public” to point to.

I will say that the extensive backwards compatibility is a big reason why Perl remains; there’s no pressure to change or get rid of “old” programs when they just keep working year and year.

The subject of the article signed his first and last name and was wondering how the officers tracked him down?

We don’t know his last name, but I think first and last name plus zip code is enough to uniquely identify a great many people.

Too me this smells of projected cash desperation. Do people actually pay for Grok?
shrubble · 6 days ago
You get Grok with paid x.com ; so there is some sort of cash from that, I would guess.

The reality is that tear gas is not an effective riot control tool. It works fine against spontaneous mobs of sports fans after their team loses, but it's not especially effective against prepared insurrectionists.

The last time the US faced this level of organized political resistance against lawful federal authority, the Army and National Guard routinely used fixed bayonets to control segregationist protesters. The same technique would work today, but with modern rifles being significantly shorter and hence being less effective bayonet platforms, a dedicated spear might be the better option.

Such weapons, employed in a close-order formation, would be much less lethal than they might seem at first blush. Historical data from 18th and 19th century conflicts shows that, even in battles where bayonet charges happened, there was still an extremely low rate of actual bayonet casualties. Even trained and disciplined soldiers will break and rout rather than let themselves be stabbed with bayonets (or, presumably, spears).

The most recent organized resistance was not segregation but the 1970s bombings. There were 2000 bombings in less than two years.

Win95 is only 30 years old and runs natively on some modern hardware.

Apparently there is important stuff still running in emulated PDP-11s, almost double the age.

shrubble · 7 days ago
Yes certain software for Canadian made nuclear power plants, comes to mind. Was a post on the VCF forums about a job listing that required PDP-11 knowledge.
