> Since tertiarization appears to be an unavoidable part of an economic progress, attempting to turn back the clock with trade restrictions is unlikely to produce the desired results. Instead, economists recommend public investment in declining communities

I don't think it gets any more common-sense-er than this. You'd think the "it's just common sense" party would understand it.

public investment to what end? that's what's not common sense at all. what form is the public investment? are we trying to create new industries? put everyone on social welfare?

I always enjoy reading deeply technical writeups like these. I only wonder how much more rare they may or may not get in the AI era.

i think the shift will be from craftmens to trademens in regards to general software engineers, but these are type of writes up stem of a artisan style all to its own.

I find it odd that the article makes almost zero mention of how Ireland is doing with its very closely related form of Gaelic. Ireland has arguably been at least slightly more successful.

Or Wales? Or other minority languages, such as Basque? Just nothing -- not a mention.

It's missing quite a lot of context.

You can't expect consistently accurate reporting on Ireland, I certainly wouldn't expect it from the BBC Eamonn growing up during the tail end of the Troubles. ;)

If there are any Europeans here, I'd love to make my vulnerability database that's accumulated from all linux security trackers and the CVE/NVD open source if I can manage to find some folks who'd help with maintenance.

Currently hosting costs are unclear, but it should be doable if we offer API access for like 5 bucks / month for private and 100 / month for corporate or similar.

Already did a backup of the NVD in the last couple hours, currently backing up the security trackers and OVAL feeds.

Gonna need some sleep now, it's morning again.

My project criteria:

- hosting within the EU

- must have a copyleft license (AGPL)

- must have open source backend and frontend

- dataset size is around 90-148 GB (compressed vs uncompressed)

- ideally an e.V. for managing funds and costs, so it can survive me

- already built my vulnerability scraper in Go, would contribute it under AGPL

- already built all schema parsers, would contribute them also under AGPL

- backend and frontend needs to be built

- would make it prerendered, so that cves can be static HTML files that can be hosted on a CDN

- needs submission/PoC/advisory web forms and database/workflow for it

- data is accumulated into a JSON format (sources are mixed non standard formats for each security tracker. Enterprise distros use odata or oval for the most parts)

If you are interested, write me on linkedin.com/in/cookiengineer or here.

Is there some statistical analysis on the reason people vote trump ? I refuse to believe the narrative that Americans are just a bunch of redneck retarded bigots.

Tried to Google it but all I find is a bunch of American news website like CNN and website like https://www.voterstudygroup.org/publication/the-five-types-t...

I'm trying to look beyond the propaganda, any idea if there has been scientific studies or anything remotely credible ?

The congestion tax works by keeping poor people off the roads of Manhatten. Who else is deterred by it?

$15 is nothing to wealthier people; their only objection will be spending the time processing the payment. But if you are making minimum wage, it's a calculation. Fees are regressive taxes.

If you are poor, you are effectively not welcome south of 60th street; that's for the rich people. If the city wants to raise revenue, how about a tax where the wealthy make an equal sacrifice. If they want to reduce congestion, how about having global businesses like Uber bid on road capacity.

Don't forget the fundamentals that made the US and NY great: All are created equal, the American dream, the land of opportunity, democratic equality, equality under the law. Manhatten is (and NYC more generally is) in many ways more than this being turned into an island for the wealthy.

I mean is the goal to be fair or to reduce congestion?
