Sad news.

Typepad brings backs fond memories of early personal "weblog", Web 1.0/2.0 era, Six Apart & Movable Type.

I think I used every Six Apart blogging tool and I loved Movable Type. It was a shame (for me as a user) when Ben and Mena sold the company.

You paid by the minute to connect to CompuServe. I eventually found free software - shared in the CompuServe forums - that would dial up, collect messages from threads you had marked offline, then hang up your modem so you could read and reply at your leisure. This was my first exposure to shareware and a huge $$ saving. I contacted the developer and offered to pay him for this and he replied with, "No thanks. Just pay it forward." A couple of great lessons there.

I have to say I'm really humbled to suddenly see this on the front page. Today was a particularly hard day; I won't go into details but taking care of a permanently disabled invalid involves a lot of ups and downs and some fairly messy manual labor to keep them comfortable and in good shape.

I love you all. Hug your kids if you have em.

EDIT: The above blog post here was one of three things I wrote in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy to try to process my feelings and exorcise my dark thoughts. I have two more which you can find below:

The Ballad of St. Halvor (a poem): https://www.fortressofdoors.com/st-halvor/

Four Magic Words (short story, somewhat dark): https://www.fortressofdoors.com/four-magic-words/

Thank you for sharing, and for writing so clearly. I just finished Four Magic Words and enjoyed it very much, including the author's note. Just bought your book as well. I wish you joy even in these difficult circumstances.

I have mild executive dysfunction that only seldomly interferes with my work. A strategy to defeating "Jim" as the article defines him, for me, is I often have trouble completing tasks if the goal/task is too broad. Going with agile methodology terms, if something is assigned to me that could be recategorized as as an epic with a bunch of sub-tasks or stories, it's very likely I procrastinate on that task, because I am not easily able to envision the series of steps to accomplish the larger goal.

So, I keep notes and to-do lists. I try to break tasks into as small of sequential tasks as possible, and then go back and prune this list throughout the week/day/hour, depending on how urgent it is and how bad the procrastination is.

Sometimes these tasks are extremely simple. As simple as "turn on your computer" sometimes. Completing them and checking it off gives that little dopamine burst and the confidence to continue the task. All you have to do is make sure that your smaller tasks are organized in a way that allow you to complete the larger goal (which admittedly isn't always easy).

This is me as well. I don't naturally 'see' that a task is actually a bunch of smaller, easier tasks. It's easier not to start when you're not sure where to start.

Except it doesn't seem to fill the photo of a room with CG furniture/art, more it renders a room that is almost but not entirely unlike the uploaded room and fills that room with furniture and art. Some of which doesn't seem to obey the laws of physics.

It's sort of neat, but it's basically just a Stable Diffusion img2img with a prompt like "living room full of furniture". Would be cooler if it actually put furniture into the room provided.

When I interviewed for my current job, I asked the HR rep and the hiring manager if they were happy working at the company. The question seemed to surprise them. Both smiled, thought for a moment, then responded positively, with some details about why they enjoyed their jobs and this company. That was 11 years ago and we're all still here.
