I'm really missing something like Cisco DMVPN. A VPN mesh between different routers where all routers have a connection to each other, so that all traffic doesn't have to pass through the hub. And that runs on a router, because all these solutions only run on a regular computer with a complete OS.

Check https://tinc-vpn.org/ it may run on your router if you're running openwrt or similar

We're having issues connecting to the ECR registry and ubuntu apt repos (the ones hosted on AWS) for the past hour and a bit in eu-west-1

I gave it the job of modifying a fairly simple regex replacement and it took a while over 5 minutes, claude failed on the same prompt (which surprised me), codex did a similar job but faster. So all in all not bad!

The scale gets surreal fast: 8 minutes for sunlight, a day to ping Voyager 1, and then it would take Voyager 1 another 75000 years to reach the nearest star. Our entire technological reach is basically a rounding error at interstellar distances.

Astronomers often have an error margin of an order of magnitude or two. 1 billion or 100 billion. Close enough either way!

I still use perl. It's my go to for string parsing (think pipe log file, do something with it and send it to stdout). It's also my go to for anything that I still want to work in 10 years.

You have the power to not host your own infrastructure on aws and behind cloudflare, or in the case of an employer you have the power to fight against the voices arguing for the unsustainable status quo.

A lot of business would accept the rare downtime from Cloudflare in exchange for the DDoS protection.

If the internet was always a nice place we wouldn't need Cloudflare and similar :(

The way things are today I'm thankful the coffee machine still works without AWS.

Feel sorry for anyone with a "smart" coffee machine.

Potentially-ignoramus comment here, apologies in advance, but amazon.com itself appears to be fine right now. Perhaps slower to load pages, by about half a second. Are they not eating (much of) their own dog food?

I was getting 500 errors a few hours ago on amazon.com
