put a few spaces before what you type

it will produce a blockquote which I hope will remove the HN "corruption" pass

It's been a while since I've done it, but I think it's still possible, though a pain in the ass, to put custom ringtones on an iPhone. It involved renaming a .m4a audio file with to have a .m4r extension and then somehow getting it on the phone. Worth it to have the opening to "Eye of the Tiger" as a ringtone.

Apple barely does it and only for their products. I agree with you that that’s already too much and too annoying but that’s an order of magnitude less than Microsoft who advertise their products pretty aggressively AND ALSO are advertising for whoever gave them money too.

Ubuntu I didn’t use it for years, there are tons of other distributions that I prefer now but last time I checked, there was a removable default shortcut to amazon. That’s an awful symbol, if you ask me, to associate Ubuntu and its meaning to Amazon but it’s nothing when compared to Apple or Microsoft (dare I say Google) behaviors.

With the recent notable exception of the F1 movie advertisement that arrived as a notification from the Wallet app. https://daringfireball.net/2025/06/more_on_apples_trust-erod...

I disabled Wallet notifications immediately :-(

BBC made a fascinating documentary called Perisher on the qualifying process for sub captains in the Royal Navy - it's available on YouTube (in the US at least) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1LF2I3fTbY

In the Washington, DC area, the Dover Harbor is a private rail car available for charter or one can join on select public trips. I believe it attaches to Amtrak trains. https://doverharbor.com/

NYTimes, I don't care how much you pay photographer Christopher Payne and the rest of your photography staff (and contractors). No way is it enough. This is incredible work.

A quick internet search tells me Payne -- who shot the article -- specializes in large-format photography focusing on industry, and the samples on his website are breathtaking: https://www.chrispaynephoto.com/ Seems like the kind of thing that would be right up HN's alley.

He had a coffee table book of photos come out not too long ago called "Made in America" that is really nice.

There was also that period of time when Ricochet was available in some places.

Wireless 56k baud. So you could take your luggable laptop circa 1994 with you and dial in to work... given you lived in SF.

Oh man I forgot about Ricochet. I remember they had service in NYC too, and it turns out also in a few other big markets. https://www.nytimes.com/2001/08/16/technology/ricochet-netwo...
