I never realized this was 2002 and when I first read it, how new it was.

And here we are almost 25 years later.

I recall using ntlm rainbow tables to crack windows hashes in high school in like 2008?

Amazing that this is still around and causing someone enough of a headache to justify spending money on.

Also amazing what a teenager with lots of free time and a bootable Linux usb can get up to.

Deepseek local and Claude are good enough for me. Gemini is also very good, but I'm aware of Google's Ad Machine there..

It's been interesting to see what was a quality leading product fail to compete and lose market share.

What I don't understand is... why? I understand keeping alive software for the sake of hardware compatibility, but browsing the web and running Discord? Is it all really just to save a few hundred dollars over... 24 years?
rootsudo · a month ago
Why not? XP was formative for many people who are in the profession now.

For me, it's knowing what I know now, what could I've done back 25 (wow!) years ago. It's a fun exercise.

When I hear people like you, I pray that natural selection will remove people like you from the population faster than mutations create them.

Wouldn't natural selection rewrd that behavior more?

My pet theory is that we're getting less than what we're paying for, compute wise, and some emergent AI is operating undetected in the margins and giving us just enough progress to keep at it.
