How did you arrive to the conclusion that this is anti-human? I believe this technology to be helpful, not harmful for humanity. We need to improve our food synthesis mechanisms.

Did anyone else laugh out loud after scrolling down the page a bit and seeing the actual device, which is a literal collar? The appearance of the device itself evokes hilarity. Who would willingly put that onto themselves? If your job requires you to attend meetings on-camera, what might your coworkers think if you wore such a device?

Look for exceptions to this rule in the near future as eSports continues its rise in popularity, and even becomes offered as an official school activity.
reversengineer commented on When the Tab Comes Due: Challenges in the Cost Structure of Browser Tab Usage   joe.cat/CHI-browser-tabs/... · Posted by u/lnyan

The thing is, if you use a web browser instead of a javascript engine designed for delivering DRM media (ie, chrome, modern FF), you can open as many tabs as you want without consequence. The problem is not tabs. The problem is multi-process and treating the browser like an operating system.

I regularly operate with 1000+ tabs on less than 3 GB of ram. This works because I disable javascript and look at web sites instead of run applications. I have extensions to full text search and switch between them and each tab stores it's path on the web, unlike bookmarks. And I've been saving my sessions every month since Opera 5 introduced tabs (I use a FF fork now). That covers 2003-2021.

Tabs are great. Modern browsers are bad.

How on earth do you manage 1000+ tabs? With some kind of add-on software, no doubt, but I would like to know your workflow.

"Shipping container housing" is the "nuclear energy" of housing solutions.
reversengineer · 4 years ago
Can you elaborate? Not everyone would see this as a bad thing. Many would argue that nuclear energy, while not perfect, is a logical next step that, solves quite effectively for the problem of demand.

Excellent idea as a proof of concept, and even beautiful in design. However one cannot help but wonder how structurally sound these materials are. Stress tests are needed to determine how well this would hold up over years of exposure to the elements before being produced en masse. For a sustainable alternative, homes made from repurposed shipping containers are a cost-effective solution for housing. They are made of weather-resistant Steel which, while not rust-proof, will not rot. A single unit can be kitted out and furnished for as little as $25,000, and yields 300+ square feet of space, comparable to a smaller studio apartment. Check out the YouTube Channel "Containing Luxury" which illustrates the sustainability of Container Homes and demonstrates them as a solution to several housing issues: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_sclvzg9dM
reversengineer commented on Ask HN: How would you store 10PB of data for your startup today?    · Posted by u/philippb

10PB with their pricing calculator comes out to over $60,000/mo. Feels like a lot.

edit: perhaps their RCS option would be cheaper if you know exactly how much data you need to store in advance.

To be fair, purchasing and hosting even the most basic mirrored RAID array of that scale comes to well over half a million for the disks alone. Then you need to manage them.

The president for the last 4 years used the leniency of big tech to work up his supporters. Then told them to take over the capitol on his way out of the White House.

Now everyone is surprised to see when big tech says enough is enough.

Where else would these people draw the line if not here?

reversengineer · 5 years ago
Thank goodness for big tech for telling me when enough is enough, otherwise I wouldn't be able to think for myself. What a relief!
