rdelpret commented on OpenDAW – a new holistic exploration of music creation inside the browser   opendaw.studio/... · Posted by u/raggi

This is deeply impressive, and of course the first thing I'm doing is sharing it with some mates. The technical completeness of this, the fact that you can do this sort of thing in the browser at all - that to me is mindblowing (I'm 52 and remember when marquee tags were a bit of a stretch...).

But... like other commenters - there it stops, and I'm just not quite sure why.

The audience is probably me. I'm an avid Ableton user - I pay a bloody fortune for it, I upgrade it every year, I am happy to support their development because it's an insanely - insanely - good piece of software that does everything I need it to do. I'm also now completely embedded in the clip view, so going back to a linear view just isn't a possibility for me.

More to the point though - this clearly isn't aimed at people who know nothing about what they're doing. It's very non-amateur and clearly very, very powerful. But at the same time it isn't aimed at me, either - as someone who does know what they're doing, I'm thinking "um, VSTs?" or "clip view?" or "live performance / latency issues?" or whatever.

So... who is the audience? Maybe there is a middle ground of people who don't have the means to fork out for a good desktop DAW. Maybe teenagers who are wanting to learn the principles without the spend. Maybe because it'd be very cool for collaborating? I just don't know.

Nonetheless, it's an insane demonstration of what can be done in a browser these days and for that I massively doff my cap - amazing work!

I would be down for a browser ableton suite that had all the stock devices and didn't have vst support. I think over time people learn that you can do 90% of what you need to do with just stock devices (although max4live support would be amazing)

My question is, who's the target audience for this?

I only know about Linktree because it's used by some artists and Twitch streamers, and they're unlikely to self-host. So presumably this is targeted to a different audience than that.

I’m not affiliated with them but you should check out “brick” I just bought one myself. It’s an rfid device you have to tap your phone on to unlock and lock apps.

I usually “brick” my phone when I go upstairs to bed and unbrick it when I go back downstairs so I don’t scroll in bed.

rdelpret commented on We need motivation (good managers)   ethanalter.com/blog/motiv... · Posted by u/ethlala

I agree with most of the commenters that only the executives and companies can provide the needs at the bottom of the pyramid and in the current climate they are not doing so. If you keep using MHON to make the case that middle managers have to fill in the gap Maslow would say you have to at least partially fulfill the needs at the bottom of the pyramid first before the higher needs have any effect and a middle manager simply does not have the power to do so.

I love that you equated company culture to motivation at scale. That hit the nail on the head.

Not only is it brand new, any prospective performance looking to book there is going to have to essentially create a bespoke show for that single venue only, that will not be able to be played anywhere else what with the big ass spherical screen being the primary differentiator.

In my mind this is like if you were to build the first IMAX theater if IMAX wasn't already a thing. You'd basically be asking Hollywood to create a special version of a movie for your single venue. Like... I'm sure some will take that up, as evident by it hosting a few shows. But it can't possibly be an "open every night" situation, the economics just don't make sense for that.

While your team would still need to be involved creatively, I would hope the sphere has an in house team to create content as well?

I noticed years ago that people treated me differently at work when I wore glasses.

I would do experiments and wear them for a couple weeks to a month then go back to contacts and observe the difference.

I work in tech.
