They check the referrer, see it's from HN and redirect to an image instead.

So by copy + paste into a new tab, it will lose the HN referrer.

on firefox, disabling referrer means you won't see the image

    network.http.sendRefererHeader = 0

This whole CoC thing is just stupid. Why do they need to write this kind of rules in the first place?

rcfaj7obqrkayhn commented on Ask HN: Graduating CS soon, how do I find a job?    · Posted by u/throwawayjobs

Bigger, name brand tech companies have way more applicants than they can accept so they have a crude recruiter funnel that is tossing out resumes for any reason they can find. They're literally trying to turn thousands of resumes from hundreds of schools into curated packets of dozens of candidates. But recruiters don't know a thing about software engineering. At best they can keyword match a few buzzwords they got from some VP of engineering who hasn't actually coded anything in 20 years (if ever). If you don't have the right 3-4 signals (school and program prestige, internship number and prestige, GPA) it's in the bin you go. The actual front line hiring managers won't even see your resume.

Try applying to smaller companies. Smaller companies aren't going to land the candidate from a top 10 school who already interned at multiple Fortune 500 companies. But small shops need to hire talent too. They're digging deeper and they have to read the resumes more closely. There isn't much of an HR department, and the hiring manager might be sifting through the raw resumes themselves.

If you still want to land a big company job, you're going to need to bypass the HR filter by finding a direct line to the hiring managers. Maybe you have some friends or alumni you've met who are at the company and can refer you directly to a team. You can meet these people at networking events, recruiting fairs, or other social activities. Creativity, determination, and luck play a big factor.

too bad a lot of smaller companies try to hire like they're big companies and hand out unrealistic assignments for the applicants
rcfaj7obqrkayhn commented on Ask HN: Have you found it difficult to get quality technical content on YouTube?    · Posted by u/wizardofmysore
rcfaj7obqrkayhn · 4 years ago
i have learned to not expect quality content from Youtube. Most channels pump out videos to grow their channel so they all have to play games(clickbait titles, flashy thumbnails, fluff videos to a certain length to please YT algorithm) and now that YT is trying to compete with tiktok, they also encourage channels to have shorter videos, and you cannot explain anything mildly complex in that short period of time.

Imo text should be the main source, then use YT videos as supplemental material

rcfaj7obqrkayhn commented on Ask HN: How Do You Learn?    · Posted by u/ggktk

Pick something controversial on the subject, explore alternate viewpoints and dig deep enough to form your own opinion. For example, when learning about nutrition, whether Keto works or not is a good controversy. One might start with Gary Taub's book, read its reviews and criticisms, read the source material that is cited by the proponents and detractors, read papers cited by those papers, until one is comfortable forming their own opinion.

Controversies are found at the cutting edge of most fields and analyzing arguments that take the "settled" knowledge in the field and still reach contradictory conclusions provides a lot of insight into the body of knowledge in the field and how much of it is really settled.

> whether Keto works or not is a good controversy

is it good? from the very little research i did, it sounds like it "depends on the person"?

Unless some exec loses their job over this, this entire sequence of events was already playbooked by Apple. They knew to wrap the feature with CSAM to hopefully quell the protests, and also to add two features at the same time, so they could backpedal in case pushback was strong, and then they could blame “misunderstanding”. Even though they are being purposefully obtuse about the “misunderstanding” because there is none.

It’s a perfectly planned PR response but no one except the biggest sheep is buying it.
