rb666 commented on Skip the Tips: A game to select "No Tip" but dark patterns try to stop you   skipthe.tips/... · Posted by u/randycupertino

Fine but a few things. 1) the service at restaurants and bars in Europe is terrible. 2) the employees at US restaurants and bars often make more money than people doing the same job in Europe. 3) it allows the folks with more money pay a larger share and those with less to pay a bit less.

The problem with tipping is tipping in places which aren't restaurants and bars.

The service in Europe is great in many many places. My experience with US service is that it feels very fake most of the time. Plus, staff having their own table/zone means you cannot ask any other waiter to help out cause "it's not their table". That's one of the many problems with this tip culture.

I agree with the tiered pricing argument, but ehm, you know you are allowed to tip in Europe also right? If you are rich and feel benevolent, feel free to leave cash on the table. You don't need others to be forced into dark-pattern PIN machines or feel guilty for not paying more than the bill for that reason.

I am surprised there does not exist a community fork of Brave yet that strips out all of the commercial stuff (rewards, AI, own updates), making it suitable for inclusion in the repos of mainstream free/libre Linux distros.

Isn't this what Helium is doing? I have been using it as daily driver for half a year, works a charm. Only would like better 1Password integration.

The jet was not flying right outside the United States though.

Did you even read the comment thread before responding to GP? You're just spreading misinformation.

His point is that the United States is the country acting in a hostile fashion.

Well, yes but the other problem is this is putting authoritarians in charge of more stuff. I had a comment comparing this to allowing people to eat too much food and that is literally where the logical outcome of this sort of thinking goes - it happens in practice, that isn't some sort of theoretical risk. The more the government decides what people can and can't want to do the worse the potential gets when they make mistakes. And this is further normalising the government making decisions about speech where they have every incentive and tendency to shut down people who tell inconvenient and important truths.

The risks are not worth the rewards of half-heatedly trying to stop kids communicating with other kids. They're still going to bully each other and what have you. They're still going to develop unrealistic expectations. They're probably even still going to use social media in practice.

You know we kids did perfectly fine before there was social media? The point is, arguably we did a lot better.

Note that using Helium, you can use a Chromium based browser and still enjoy uBlock Origin properly.

The default program on my Miele pops the door open like 2 minutes into the cycle. Maybe the slower ones don't?
rb666 · 4 months ago
That sounds like the behavior of the Eco program, which is often the default.

If there was ever a game to play with KB+M, this is it. I don't get the need to stuff everything into a handheld. It's not Mario kart!

Would love to understand it better too. It looks like the use cases are similar but the tech is different. NetBird is an alternative to Tailscale that uses Wireguard under the hood while these seem to use Traefik under the hood.

I am personally a user of NetBird and love it.

The design of the UI is very similar though :)

rb666 · 8 months ago
Pangolin also uses WireGuard and does not lock features behind a paywall.

Everyone is either pure good or pure evil now, huh? Red team or blue team, compromise is anathema, the centre a desert.

FWIW I’m no fan of Trump, but I’m even less of a fan of this bipolar tribalism.

rb666 · 9 months ago
There's been plenty Republican presidents who did evil things and mixed it up with acceptable or even positive change. Trump is the first one who's actually an evil fascist at heart. That's the difference.

Just use Proxmox, it's fantastic for many vMware use-cases.
