>Communication networks are not profitable.

Ma Bell tells me they may not have considered all possible angles on this matter.

Ma Bell was never profitable without government cheese. And her offspring can’t do much but complain about how every one else is making huge margins over “their” infrastructure.

Telecom is very very broken.

404media is shadowbanned from HN for nebulous reasons. The mods should really revisit this policy: they've been doing some great reporting recently.

Has there been any mention of reasoning behind it?

I'm the owner of one of these laptops. I paid like $2-3k or even more for the laptop. The screen got broken almost on arrival. I think few days later it started glitching. It was intermittent, so I thought it would go away. I didn't. Over time it started glitching more and more. I reached out to the person in China who sold the laptop. In broken English he told me that I should replace the screen and sent me a link. I bought the screen, actually two of them, since for some reason you can't buy one. Turned out that the screen doesn't fit, and I cracked the first one while trying to install. So now I have a laptop without a screen, and it just doesn't work.

I bought Macbook Air for $1k just one week ago. I can't be more happier. Fuck these ThinkPads.

As a counter-experience, I bought five of the x63s and was so paranoid I’d bork the screens somehow. They all work fine to this day.

I so wish that FreeBSD was GPL. I know this won't be a popular opinion, but I believe that success Linux has had is because of copyleft, and *BSD are riding on the coat tails of that.

But I don't like Linux. I use it daily, but I don't like it. I wish FreeBSD held the position Linux does in the market today. That would be heaven.

It is so hopelessly depressing. I was wrapt reading it from start to finish and thoroughly enjoyed it as few recent articles at length have been.

And then going to the comments, excitedly no less, to find…this?

There's a lot more silicon at Google aside from the TPU team, including their own previous NICs.
pyvpx · 4 months ago
Not that my memory is ironclad, but I don’t recall any custom IP or even FPGA attempts at Google re: host networking or NICs. Any good search terms I should try to enlighten myself? thanks!

I wouldn't be surprised if Google buys the IP since they're the only customer.
pyvpx · 4 months ago
How, though? Does the TPU team (literally or logically) map to owning IPU h/w successfully?

(I miss having these kinds of convos on twitter as networkservice ;)

> It's the reason a FreeBSD derivative lies at the core of Juniper routers

Juniper is a particularly poor example to start the list with as they have been moving away from FreeBSD for years now with Junos OS Evolved being Linux based and specifically about how being based on FreeBSD was no longer a benefit to them.

pyvpx · 2 years ago
no one seriously uses Evo in the way JunOS powers things. they’ve managed to package FreeBSD inside some Linux flavors. it’s wild, imo.
