pratnala commented on Microsoft to Cut 9k Workers in Second Wave of Major Layoffs   bloomberg.com/news/articl... · Posted by u/htrp

This pairs well with:

1 - Microsoft investing 3bn USD in India-based developers: https://www.reuters.com/technology/microsoft-invest-3-bln-ex...

2 - Microsoft having 4700 H1B filings for fiscal 2025: https://www.myvisajobs.com/employer/microsoft/

Utterly predictable behavior by Satya Nadella.

Layoffs are planned in India too.

> Now Apple has become just another cooperate entity but with design team holding sufficient political power.

You’d be surprised to hear how much the political power of the design team within Apple has eroded over the last decade.

Here’s a little game of insider Apple baseball:

1) why do you think the chief of design isn’t on this page? https://www.apple.com/leadership/

2) from the SVPs on that same page, who do you think the chief of design reports to?

What is the answer to 2?

Ah yes the classic "huwhite people and muh racism" gambit.

It's tired. H1Bs are gamed to the point of uselessness. Most companies internally post H1B job offerings so people are aware. I've yet to see one with a competitive salary. They are used to source cheaper labor and avoid paying actual Americans the fair wage they deserve. The last 15-20 years of tech has slowly seen the InfoSys-ization of the tech economy. I work with more contractors from Mexico, India, and Eastern Europe, and more H1Bs from India than literally anyone else. On my team I can count the number of Americans on one hand.

The program should be extremely limited. I am a fan of charging 2-3x the normal tax rate for H1Bs so companies have to actually justify hiring "talent you can't find in America". There are 300,000 unemployed tech workers. I find it hard to believe none fit the bill. Just that most won't take a 60% haircut for more work.

Nonsense.

That's a terrible suggestion.

Is 100k somehow a small number? How many of them are working on YouTube? To prioritize an issue and not another is a deliberate act, and YouTube has had problems in Firefox for years.

Less than 10k and all aren't engineers

Many RTO mandates are worst of both worlds: hot-desking, lots of Zoom calls. I'm not sure where Amazon lies on that scale, but if I was forced back into the office just to Zoom from there, I'd be pissed.
pratnala · a year ago
They are also scrapping hot desking.

It's an interesting "time is a circle" problem given that a century only has 100 years and then we loop around again. 2-digit years is convenient for people in many situations but they are very lossy, and horrible for machines.

It reminds me of this breaking change to .Net from last year.[1][2] Maybe AA just needs to update .Net which would pad them out until the 2050's when someone born in the 1950s would be having...exactly the same problem in the article. (It is configurable now so you could just keep pushing it each decade, until it wraps again).

Or they could use 4-digit years.

Just use 4-digit years. Done.

Same same. I went through the password reset flow (I was overdue anyways), it never sent anything to my SMS, so I did it again with email, reset the password and went to log in with the new password, "Incorrect password" error. Old password, also incorrect.

Didn't help that I had just posted a lukewarm spicy take on how linguistic prescriptivism is BS.

All the while the website felt like it was unstable, hard to describe, but it felt like it was bouncing around between URLs too much and reloading a lot.

Definitely feels like a botched update on their end.

E: Instagram is misbehaving as well, banner loads but big "Something is wrong" error on the feed.

E: now youtube has "Something went wrong" - WTF. I can't believe I'm saying this, but thank goodness for reddit and X[itter]???

E: interesting, seeing a big spike across multiple platforms on downdetector, including AWS: https://downdetector.com/status/aws-amazon-web-services/ I'm not able to log in right now, but that could be PEBCAK, I have too many saved IDs and I don't want to fail2ban myself

The password reset flow was broken too. And I got logged out on every device. My friend who works there said they can't login either.

Yes. My spidey sense went off and I told my work I'll be off for an hour while I redo all my passwords... might still do that but glad to know it's not necessarily me getting hacked.
pratnala · a year ago
don't bother. fb's forgot password flow is broken too.
