No, work is effort expended to achieve a result. Whether it's paid or not is irrelevant, and many people work harder for free than they ever do in employment, because the incentives are right.
peepee1982 · 4 months ago
This is a useless definition, especially in this context. Washing my dishes is not work, because it's ultimately irrelevant whether I do it or not, although I'm doing it still because I have a result in mind.

It also comes across as very out of touch and privileged, because unless you have a relatively cushy job, you would definitely not see the difference between being paid or not as irrelevant. There are plenty of people who have to work very hard just to make ends meet, be it physically exhausting work, or repetitive and monotonous work. And they will not have the capacity to work even harder once they clock out of work, no matter the incentives, because they'll be spent and unable to.

Windows is only free if your time has no value

Between Windows, Linux, and macOS, I’ve probably been the most productive on Windows, even though it’s the least enjoyable for me and I wish I could use Linux exclusively for my work.

Linux, on the other hand, has been the least productive. Part of the problem is that it encourages users to tinker, but it also tends to break more easily—whether from tinkering itself or updates that mess with settings or drivers.

I’m not sure about the current state of support for multi-monitor setups with different pixel densities, but I remember struggling a lot with that in various desktop environments in the past.

> (Is it the year of Desktop Linux yet?)

I know this is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek comment but I would argue that the year of the Linux desktop was in 2022 when the Steam deck, albeit a non-desktop machine, was released. It's a pretty popular console and really forwarded the idea of playing video games on Linux being seamless. The state of gaming on Linux is/was one of the main reason why so many people are/were holding out on Windows, and with a few exceptions of massive games like Fortnite, it's basically here. Adoption, however, is a different story.

peepee1982 · 6 months ago
I'm not entirely convinced about that. We'll see when a more generalized desktop distro comes along and gains traction with gamers. So far, Linux hasn't really made the jump from the Steam Deck to the desktop. I haven't seen a mass migration of gamers from Windows to Linux yet. As long as Windows offers even a marginally better experience, I don't think it'll happen anytime soon.

Additionally, there are still many types of software that either don't run on Linux or don't perform as well. I primarily use my PC for music production, and that pretty much rules out using Linux unless I'm willing to spend more time configuring things or risk potential compatibility issues.

I do wish I could switch to a Linux desktop without feeling like a second-class citizen in certain areas. I prefer writing web applications on Linux, but with WSL working well enough, I’m too lazy to dual boot just for that.

That said, I'm looking forward to installing Arch on my old laptop. I may be an adult with a full-time job, kids, and little free time, but I'm still a nerd at heart.

I was a longtime JUCE user and won't hold my breath for them to support the web. They skate strictly where the puck was two years ago, not where it's going. I also wouldn't call their Linux support "easy" - it's not surprising to me very few JUCE developers even consider using Linux in CI, let alone as a supported target.

That said, I think there's something interesting about building out an audio platform with "no VSTs" as a constraint - about 6 years ago I was convinced that the web was a deadend for even middling complexity audio projects when I saw Bandlab at NAMM, and I was very wrong. It seems like the value of a DAW that you can fire up in a browser and instantly access all your projects/share them with your friends is more valuable than having no plugins and crashing after hitting browser tab memory limits. And looking down the road it frees you from the serious problems with native plugins and current plugin APIs.

peepee1982 · 7 months ago
I recently used Bandlab when I was at my girlfriend's and the only thing I had with me was my company's laptop, which I don't install any audio software on.

I wrote and recorded a little song and published it withing three hours or so, just as an experiment.

I had to reload the UI a few times after moving too quickly and because of a janky internet connection, but other than that I thought it was a well designed tool. I think it's liberating to be shielded from the many choices you make when working in a "real" DAW, and when I don't have REAPER or Studio One around, I'll happily work with a tool like this to simply stay in the habit of producing music when on the road.

> It will not work under authoritarian rule like Russia or China, you will just end up in a gulag freezing to death or on your town square bleeding out . . . Making yourself a victim is just a practical way to attract more people's attention

Allow me to quote from the Wikipedia page of the Arab Spring:

> The catalyst for the escalation of protests was the self-immolation of Tunisian Mohamed Bouazizi. Unable to find work and selling fruit at a roadside stand, Bouazizi had his wares confiscated by a municipal inspector on 17 December 2010. An hour later he doused himself with gasoline and set himself afire. His death on 4 January 2011 brought together various groups dissatisfied with the existing system, including many unemployed persons, political and human rights activists, labor and trade unionists, students, professors, lawyers, and others to begin the Tunisian Revolution.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_Spring

Did Bouazizi make himself a victim, or a martyr? The only reason the Arab Spring fizzled out was due to directed intelligence and military operations supported by the US and Western regime, not more authoritarian regimes like Russia or China.

I have the highest possible respect for self-made martyrs around a good cause. Claudette Colvin, Rosa Parks, etc. all pushed the needle and eventually paved the way for both white and non-white citizens to share in our nation's bounty.

Is the civil rights movement finished? No. We need more martyrs.

Thanks for mentioning Claudette Colvin.

I loved reading this! Not just because some of those games are deeply ingrained in my childhood, but also because the writing itself is exceptional. The structure is strong, there’s no fluff, and it’s still vivid and playful. I loved it.

I also read the author's thoughts on the writing process, and the way he described it closely mirrored how I approach working on music, which was illuminating.

I also loved the article about how software development is a form of knowledge building. Once again, excellent writing!

Time to advertise the Phoniebox https://phoniebox.de/, building you own Tonie clone with NFC chips and a raspberry pie. (some assembly required)

That's great! I was looking for something like this when my oldest was around three. He's ten now, my youngest is three.

I might build this with my children together.

I had the TipToi's precursor as a kid: https://www.erinnerstdudich.de/70er/elexikon-von-ravensburge... (scroll down to the comments for more pictures).

This used a much simpler device - basically it consisted of two electrical probes connected with a wire, one of them containing batteries and a light bulb, and it worked together with a board with contact pads with hidden interconnections. Then there were several sheets where you had to find the numbers in the picture corresponding to the labels printed along the right side of the sheet.

I also like the honesty of the text on the box saying that it's "electrical", when the temptation to (incorrectly) use "electronical" instead must have been great...

peepee1982 · 9 months ago
Ah! I salvaged one of those from the local waste collection center and it was an easy fix to make it work again!

I had a Questron pen as a child and loved it, also made by Ravensburger.

As an immigrant father of 2 small children, living in Germany for the past few years, I have found that Germany has some real "hidden champions" amongst the tech-enabled learning products space. This Tip-toi product and associated ecosystem is one of them, and another is Tonies, which is a kind of audio player in a nice cushioned box that uses cartoon-like figures to choose which audio books to play.
peepee1982 · 9 months ago
I am a father of three small ones in Austria. The Tonies are cute, but I find them just so frivolously expensive!

My children loved to listen on audio books on CDs (can be rented from libraries or bought for cheap) or on an old 1st gen iPod.
