It's not comprehensive, but will give you a taste of the flavor of what Usenet was like.
In the days when Sussman was a novice Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6. "What are you doing?", asked Minsky.
"I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe."
"Why is the net wired randomly?", asked Minsky.
"I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play"
Minsky shut his eyes,
"Why do you close your eyes?", Sussman asked his teacher.
"So that the room will be empty."
At that momment, Sussman was enlightened.

I haven’t heard people in favor of geography-agnostic salaries address this concern, which seems legitimate from the company’s perspective. I suppose there are tradeoffs either way.

I'm always reminded of the commercial where the young man saves up his money and works hard so his much older self can fly first class somewhere. I always think the same, this could be some other version of himself, does it make sense to give this your future self?
The only thing of value we leave behind is our artistic creations. Whatever Javascript adware or trendy C replacement you're hacking on will be obsolete before you finish decomposing. All your "experiential purchases" like travel, relationships, etc. will be gone in a flash. The only thing left will be the art you created. The art you created is of course not entirely your own, it's essentially a restatement of the world cultural traditions, but through the lens of your life experience in a way that only you could create.
