I’m in the midsts of this right now and it’s depressing. I spent yesterday morning with a sore throat and itchy eyes and most of the afternoon hopelessly driving hours away for a box fan and furnace filter (I finally found them). All the while I should have been working. Some of my coworkers have complained of week-long headaches. If anyone else is suffering from this: you are not alone.

Yeesh. I'm sorry. I'm in CO and even the levels here get me all of the symptoms you mentioned. Last week I drove 1700 miles and only escaped the smoke during a summertime snowfall. It rebounded and while driving I was suppressing a mild anxiety attack bc there's nothing you can do to escape it.

Driving at sunrise/sunset reminds me of the original Mad Max. Expect real and depressing.

Two countries in the world are called Niger and Nigeria. Shall we stop talking about those countries too?
originalbryan2 · 5 years ago
From what I can tell, those countries are now racist based on their names and should be fired.

History books should be burned.

No human should ever speak to another human again.

But we all need to be in offices in close quarters once the pandemic ends, so that we can fire each other for accidental using the word "she" in a conversation.

What exactly is your daily routine then. Raising 4 kids while working full time with your spouse working 11 hours outside of the house is a pretty large claim.

I've run into a number of dads that drive really hard, always at the expense of sleep. They seems to die early, 40s 50s. Might be possible.

I'm in a similar kids/work situation and it's going very rough at best. But then again I'm a completely terrible parent, barely capable as a normal functioning adult, and my kids inherited the coked up hummingbird trait from their mother.

originalbryan2 commented on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?    · Posted by u/OnWriting

Joke answer: Get a dog!

My little dog is the worst/best boss. He yells at me when it's time to start the work day (he sits on the bed behind me like the lazy freeloader he is). He yells again at lunch (he needs to pee) and at 5pm (he needs to pee again). The only problem is he doesn't understand Saturday, so like clockwork, 8am Sat morning, yap yap yap, go to work.

Real answer: Get up and walk away.

If the apartment is small, walk down the hall or around the block. You need an actual mental break from work. Once the walk is done DO NOT START WORK AGAIN.

I find I actually have a better balance WFH, as now I don't work past 5, I just get up and walk away (unless there's something that's actually critical).

Also joke answer: get multiple young children.

But also my personal answer: multiple young children. Around 4-5pm they are hungry and it's time to do X & Y with them. Overall domestic responsibilities are so demanding that if I don't rip out of work and start cooking, cleaning, bathing, teaching, lawn work, etc as fast as possible, I'll be lucky to get to sleep before midnight.

>I couldn't read the oven clock (blue on black) at just 10 feet away

I have good vision: no known issues, regular eye checkups, etc. But I find it nearly impossible to read most displays that use blue LEDs. If the background is blue (eg: timex indiglo watch) then it's fine. But blue leds on some of my home theater equipment drive me insane. Even if it isn't the letters/numbers themselves and it's just a regular circular power led, I find them really hard to look at.

originalbryan2 · 5 years ago
I first noticed the blue light issue when xmas led lights were put on trees around the holidays. Blue blurry things. Now my credit union has their sign in blue and I can’t read it.

10 years later I developed astigmatism in both eyes. Dark mode is really blurry in some settings.

The blue light thing, as I understand it, is where you first begin to notice astigmatism. The wavelength is shorter and a very slight astigmatism becomes more apparent.

I also dont like how people put sunscreen on the kids almost every time they go out. I live in Australia, so you absolutely do want to protect your skin, but heading to the park for an hour doesn't need sunscreen every time.

2 generations ago it was common to literally lie in the sun for hours putting coconut oil on your skin to increase tanning. And yes they did have higher skin cancer rates but there is a fair gap between that and not doing it + a long sleeve shirt/hat.

Im trying to move to a screen free Sunday to encourage more outdoors/interaction but screens are so ingrained in our lives now its not popular.

originalbryan2 · 5 years ago
I'm not sure what to think about that. I live in CO and people here that don't sunscreen are so much more damaged than others I know in different states. It's drastically obvious. So I sunscreen my kids like crazy. I keep thinking that I'm at least giving their adult selves the option to look 50 at age 35 if they decide to quit using sunscreen religiously. Unsure if this is the best approach. Their doctor loves it though.

I have worked from home for the last couple of years. Prior to the Covid shutdown, I had generally enjoyed it. Once my children's school closed and my wife's work switched to work from home, my productivity has plummeted. I find it impossible to focus as every 10 minutes I have a young child running into my office, or have to listen to them yelling at each other (as all kids do). My wife has had a hard time adjusting and she is equally distracted by the kids and her frustration feeds mine. She is forced to be on conference calls for most of the day (I am actually surprised at how many there are, they are all calls with executive level people so she cant opt out. Almost all income producing departments have to pass through her team and they laid off her support staff) but is still expected to complete real work as well which she cant do now until the calls stop after 5. I have been able to get very little deep work done and find myself working until 2 / 3 am to accomplish the same work I used to do in a normal shift.

I feel very bad for my kids as all they want is to be able to play with their friends and do all the things they could before so I do my very best to not show them my frustration. Its a depressing situation all around but I am very grateful to actually still have a job while so many others have lost theirs. My kids ask me why I have to work so much all the time, as all they want to do is spend time with me.

I guess what I am trying to say is the current situation is not optimal.

originalbryan2 · 5 years ago
Other than having not worked from home for many years now (which I am very happy to do when it works out), your experience is highly relatable. For the kids, I'm sad and wish I could do something more for them. But work abounds.

> One commenter here is asking for more, for punishment, another demands their security team be fired. And I mean, if someone wants to try to sue Zoom for misusing the term E2EE then go for it, but obviously Zoom can't "punish itself" in a blog post, and pinning it on a few bad engineers feels like a scapegoat.

A portion of the development community loves to talk about blameless post-mortems and a blame-free culture until a tech company like Zoom does something they don't like.

If there are about 100k infected in the US today and this number grows 10x per week, we are 1 month from the entire country being infected. With 20% requiring hospitalization, it will be a blood bath. There will be nobody to benefit from this vaccine.
originalbryan2 · 5 years ago
The rate is increasing, it's slightly worse. It's looking really really really bad. The vaccine's purpose will be to stop this from happening yearly for the rest of human history.
