Prisoners are charged rent. The hourly wages have no minimum wage and are usually cents on the dollar. Definitely not enough to pay their rent for their cell.

It's slavery. The South fought hard to include the "except as punishment for crime" clause in the 13th amendment. The US has never fully abolished slavery.

Say what? Prisoners pay rent?

Thank you for the giggle, I misread this as a statement of faith and a non-sequitur.

Yeah, really needed the comma on the left side of the parenthesis.

7x longer for 11x the cost seems pretty good all things considered.

Always thought it seemed like a waste to not also dig out a bunch of storage while we're down there. I'm sure there are good reasons we don't

It's not seven times longer. The Austrian line is 130km with 50km of tunnels.

            Length Tunnels Bridges Stations Cost
    Koralm 130km ~50km 100 12 €6b
       HS2 230km ~75km 100+ 4 €74b+
Obviously this does not give any indication of the complexity of each project. Tunnelling and building railway through a metropolis I would imagine is quite challenging.

It is mostly within budget, estimated in 2005 were 5.5 billion €, total cost as of today are 5.9 billion €, the difference being largely attributed to the pandemic and later addition of sections.

To contrast, HS2 here in the UK has cost £40 billion (€45 billion) to date with a further £25 billion (€28 billion) allocated, for a largely superterranean route of 230km.

> "Years of average use" is great until you realize that it actually means "Roughly 12 to 15 hours of recording".

Is that based on anything, or is that just a guess?

Anyway, 12 hours' worth of 30 second recordings is a total of 1440 recordings. I guess three a day for a year does seem a little low?

> Just hate Apple and love e-waste rings? Enlighten me.

What e-waste? You send it in for recycling; they might just replace the battery and send you a your existing ring back.

oniony · 12 days ago
You have to trust it will actually get recycled though. I struggle to believe they'll be swapping out the batteries and reselling these as reconditioned. (I struggle to believe many people will even send them in for recycling tbh.)

Unlikely, does anyone in this sector actually bother complaining about piracy anymore? Except for sports, they've largely managed to kill it off.
oniony · 12 days ago
I had read it was resurging since they started upping the pricing and the fragmentation that occurred since Disney split off.

Does anyone else find the way of using tsunami.gov totally baffling? It tells the user almost nothing, and the target of all the hrefs for the supposed messages listed in the map is just the tsunami.gov homepage again. The entire above-the-fold is occupied by the map, and the map tells the user nothing.

The map has pins for events. At this moment there is one off Japan and one off Alaska.

I was paying $24 for crave. They showed me ads.

I'm not paying crave anymore.

But rest assured they'll blame piracy for their downturn in revenue.
