nrp commented on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now   dosaygo-studio.github.io/... · Posted by u/keepamovin

I'm impressed by the depth of snark from GPro3 here, e.g. - Google kills Gemini Cloud Services (killedbygoogle.com) - The unexpected return of server-side rendering (htmx.org)

And, how GPro3 clearly 'knows' HNews and knows what makes it to frontpage, e.g.: - Restoring a 2024 Framework Laptop: A retrospective (ifixit.com) - Show HN: A text editor that doesn't use AI (github.com) - Is it time to rewrite sudo in Zig? (github.com)

Good laughs.

The trick with predictions is that once they are communicated they can influence the outcome. We’ll work with the iFixit team to make that article happen!

Everything is "blazingly fast" now. What does it even mean.
nrp · 14 days ago
Phoronix found CachyOS to actually be meaningfully faster than Ubuntu or Fedora on a Framework Desktop: https://www.phoronix.com/review/cachyos-ubuntu-2510-f43/6

How is project like Framework Laptop able to sponsor anyone? Are they profitable? Had an impression they're more of a startup stage project far from profitability.
nrp · 14 days ago
Our total set of 2025 sponsorships and donations is around $225k, which is a fraction of a percent of our 2025 revenue. We would like to and plan to increase the funding we allocate to open source projects that our products and customers depend on in 2026. Our financials are healthy, and we see this as a good investment.

Very interesting that Valve and Framework seem to be throwing their eggs in the Arch basket over Debian/Ubuntu. When I got my first computer, I installed Ubuntu because it was dominant. Maybe it still is for the average Linux downloader, but why are the Hardware companies more into Arch?

We also sponsor Debian. We are distro-agnostic and pick our sponsorships largely based on what we see Framework Laptop owners using in our post-purchase surveys and community polls.

I think framework made a misstep with this spornsorship deal. I still think they should be supported in their mission and you don't have to regret your purchase.

Point of clarification: we don’t sponsor Omarchy. We did sponsor Rails World, which is put on by the Rails Foundation, because our site is built on Rails. Our full set of sponsorships is here: https://frame.work/blog/framework-sponsorships

Just got my Framework 13 last week. I really love this computer, and how it is pushing for upgradability and repairability in this segment. Thanks a lot for creating this computer!

We consider LVFS to be critical infrastructure for our products and are happy to support it. Richard is doing excellent work.

I read the drama last week, and after seeing this, I have to side with Rebble. I think they kept the community alive since Eric M cashed out and Fitbit shut it down. As the stars have aligned in recent years, Eric revives Pebble, but if Rebble wouldn't spend all the effort maintaining the app store, his consumer base would be much smaller and it would be much harder to bootstrap again.

With Repebble (Core Devices) and their new appstore (or/and apt-style repository system), Rebble seems obsolete, it's a bit sad. They deserve credit which they won't be able to claim anymore. They should be rewarded somehow for bridging the dark age, otherwise it seems they served purpose all until Eric returned and said "Thank You and fuck off".

Also, to me, Eric talking doesn't sound authentic, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's lying. I don't mean to insult though, mad respect for putting project like Pebble together.

Hope that there's some place and purpose for Rebble in the future.

From Eric’s previous blog post, he did not “cash out”:

> I earned almost nothing from Pebble Tech Corp. I paid myself a $65,000 salary each year. I did not get any payout through the asset sale.

Eric also made a pretty detailed writeup a few years ago about what drove the failure and acquisition of the original Pebble company: https://ericmigi.com/blog/success-and-failure-at-pebble

The complaint about power usage in suspend is especially sad because it’s pretty much a common problem for Linux on laptops. Not sure if that’s what applies here, but the numbers about match what I see with my Framework. Basically: if you want to use secure boot you usually also want kernel lockdown mode, and you cannot hibernate a lockdowned kernel. At least not without out-of-tree patches.

IMHO that’s a giant issue. If you can’t hibernate (aka suspend to disk) you will never be able to get that power consumption low. And telling people to not run secure boot or lockdown is not really a good answer either. Especially since the default installer already sets those things up. I get that „Linux on laptops“ is not a priority big enough to get a proper fix for that. And that it’s not an easy issue to fix. But the current state is really really sad.

Out of box hibernation support in popular Linux distros is also something we want badly. We’re watching this one eagerly: https://github.com/basecamp/omarchy/pull/1417
