npodbielski commented on Pretty soon, heat pumps will be able to store and distribute heat as needed   sintef.no/en/latest-news/... · Posted by u/PaulHoule

1. The device is just storage. It would be paired with an air or ground source heat pump.

2. With good insulation you can easily store heat for a day which is all you need. You're never going to get close to storing summer heat for the winter. That's not impossible but not feasible for something this scale (and not cost effective at any scale).

3. You just heat it up and cool it down. There are no fancy chemical processes happening other than the phase change. It's exactly like a phase change hot/cold pack you can buy on Amazon.

4. I'm pretty sure this is designed for domestic heating...

It's kind of an obvious idea tbh. I don't think they've done anything super innovative... They made an aluminium heat sink..

This is ground basically. How deep varies but few meters underground you basically have average yearly temperature. You could pump heat from house to the ground to take it out from the ground during winter.

Except you've replaced something good with something worse. IPMI really isn't an improvement over having SSH to the system. It definitely has more security holes.

Can you SSH into broken grub? Can you change BIOS settings? Also giving access like that outside your home network is not a good idea. So security issues does not matter that much.
npodbielski commented on Floppy disks turn out to be the greatest TV remote for kids   blog.smartere.dk/2026/01/... · Posted by u/mchro

This is a fun setup, I have a child due in March and have been thinking through all the things to help make things not instant for learning patience as well. While I may still to DVDs for viewing, as I kept my collection building. I do have a floppy drive available and like this idea.

For those talking about not using TV much, or that the UI is slow, my setup is a cheap projector hooked into my sound system and hooking up a laptop when streaming as necessary. Really dislike the smart anything that can be used in other ways for the reasons I already saw mentioned, but it is hard to lag something that has no Internet by looking for ads and updates for sure.

Generally it is better not to show kids those cartoons. I have 3 kids already and trust me: Stick and some piece of thread is much better. 3 hours of watching anything for the entire week is more than enough.

So it's AWS Fargate with a different name? That's cool for cloud hosted stuff. But if you're on prem, or manage your own VPS' then you need SSH access.

I bought last year mobo with IPMI so in theory I could have forgot about SSH and just inspect startup logs if it would fail to start.

Though I must say I am not brave enough and my family uses it so I prefer to have jest one broken service instead of enire machine.

But it is possible.

That is looks interesting. An idea to configure server on run via symtemd would probably mean that migrating from machine to machine would be very easy. It always meant for me at least two days of carefull planning, copying od files testing and fixes because I always forgot about some obscure config changes I did somewhere, like adding DNS entry somewhere or disabling default SMTP on debian.

They can? How many times have you migrated? Try going from the Middle East or Africa to any developed country.
npodbielski · a month ago
You are joking right? There were handred of thousands of people that did this in last ten years or so to EU.

There's nothing cheerful in that comment, it describes a danger that inexorably draws nearer and nearer.

Maybe he meant this in more general way. Or this is how did read this.

> The most self-evident, convivial answer is an old one: blogs. HTML is free to access by default, RSS has worked for about 130 years

What the... How RSS which is an XML can predates internet and computers and even transistors?
