You know who has great information density? Pornhub. If you open Pornhub on a 4K screen, you will absolutely see none of the thumbnails. I think YouTube is overdoing it, but it is really a thing of: people are either using really small screens or 1080p. 4K is still not around much.

Having gone through the process of incorporation myself, I agree with everything you said: Yes, there is some paperwork you'll have to take care of and a bit of a learning curve to everything but not outrageously so. It can all be done within ~2 weeks (including roundtrip times for mail). Yes, that's still a lot more than it'll take you in e.g. Estonia (where you can do everything online in a few minutes from what I've been told) but it really would be the least of my worries, compared to actually running the company.

That being said, I do think the process could be simplified drastically. Not necessarily by getting rid of the notary requirement but 1) through digitalization and 2) by streamlining (possibly centralizing) the whole back and forth between notary (official incorporation & signing of articles of incorporation), bank (getting a business account + obtaining proof you actually put the money in that account that you're claiming to have during incorporation), local court (registering the company, including articles of incorporation), tax authorities (getting a tax ID and sales tax ID), local authorities (getting a business permit), local chamber of commerce (paying dues for mandatory membership), Federal Gazette / federal company register (submitting your initial balance sheet).

This is my general opinion with regards to bureaucracy in Germany. All the data is most likely already there and all the technical challenges have been solved in the meantime. Why do I have to do the runaround from office to office, when they are physically connected by a piece if wire (aka the internet).

There is a reason why we have so much bureaucracy in Germany (1. because we like it) and second because it is supposed to provide trust, trust that every company I deal with is legit, trust that the system knows who is participating. Without trust nobody would make business or business would be very hard, because you would have to price in the risk of not having trust.

Read the docs, it's all there.

Edit: Seriously? You click on docs and almost all of those questions are answered. It's 1 click away. Parent didn't even try.

I found the netboot docs very hard to understand if you dont have a existing knowledge of PXE.

I think a better way would be to keep the foundation and spin off a company that manufactures all of that. Sell 49% of that company in an IPO and keep the majority stake in the foundation. This way they can raise money for expansion while keeping the mission in line.

This also signals very clear to investors what this enterprise is about.

In Europe and the EU it is thanks to the GDPR. At least if its PII, if you wanna collect weather data, feel free to do so.
notanormalnerd commented on Houston Is Going Broke Because of Its Sprawl   strongtowns.org/journal/2... · Posted by u/jseliger

I’m glad you responded. I’ve been reading their articles for years, and the takeaway is always - all sprawl is bad, we must consolidate on row houses or other higher density designs to reduce the cost per linear foot of road to service these suburban layouts. Well, maybe people prefer their space, and in the last 10 years, my house has increased in value by $500k. Possibly we could tax suburban properties differently based upon their marginal infrastructure costs? Nope, have to outlaw it and rip it down otherwise it’s going to degrade into blight.

Some of their proposals are intriguing, but their dismissal of alternate funding methods for suburban living seems shortsighted.

notanormalnerd · 2 years ago
Lol. Like you are going to pay 1500$ per month for marginal infrastructure cost? Suburbans are pretty expensive as well as rural communities, I don't need a consultancy to see that.

Look at some of the poorer places in America and you can see what you can get with no property tax or other contributions.

Suburbia is unnecessarily subsidised.

notanormalnerd commented on Why are there suddenly so many car washes?   bloomberg.com/news/featur... · Posted by u/philip1209
bluefirebrand · 2 years ago
In my city you're not allowed to wash your car in your driveway

I guess it's too hard on the storm drains to have soap and dirt and stuff going down them

Or maybe city council is just in some kind of racket with car wash owners or something

But either way, that's why we have so many car washes here... And it sucks ass

notanormalnerd · 2 years ago
It is mostl due to the oil and other hazardous materials potentially going into the ground or the city sewer.

They can't or won't clean that and it is contaminating in even small amounts. E.g. one drop of oil contaminates 500l of water.

At least for Germany.

Every time I tried to add an API to a Django project by using DRF, I was surprised by the sheer complexity it introduced to get basic things working.

I don't mich like the strict and inflexible DRF approach.

But great that they keep continuing supporting the framework for the people that like and use it. Or just use it.

notanormalnerd · 2 years ago
DRF does what it says on the tin. It is REST by the definition of it. Not a HTTP JSON API but strict REST. A object with CRUD as an API. Everything else is outside of scope and mostly reall hard to do.

That's why I rarely use DRF and either use function based views directly or use another library.

I find it hard to criticize DRF, but one thing that could be added to the documentation is how to deal with M2M. Last time I tried a few different ways of doing it, and only two of them worked, then I had to figure out which way is better.

Also, https://www.cdrf.co/ helps with the class inheritance tree.

notanormalnerd · 2 years ago
Which is obviously inspired by https://ccbv.co.uk/ which helps with the normal django class based views.

It really helped me find my way around the inheritance tree as well.
