I'm surprised he didn't mention anything about bluetooth pairing and general ease of use. I have a Sony MDR-100 which is a great middle of the road (price/quality) wireless headset. The biggest gripe I have with it is pairing/connecting to my web of devices and music quality. This is one area that Apple routinely gets right. Bluetooth just works better on Apple devices. I can connect the headset to my windows laptop, play some music, and it will come through muddled. I then switch over to my Macbook Pro and the same music will come through noticeably better. I'm not sure if the Apple Bluetooth drivers are just that much better or if the built in Windows ones are that much worse?

that really is not accurate. macbooks are notoriously terrible with bluetooth. with my macbook pro, it is impossible to play music on a bluetooth speaker, as it starts stuttering within seconds of use. this is a common problem over many years, and there's a litany of solutions on the forums, most of which don't work. another common problem is iTunes automatically opening and even playing when bluetooth headphones connect. in many cases, there's no way to prevent it. in my case, the only thing that stopped it was renaming iTunes, which required a lot of ceremony to even do. it seems in zoom meetings, it's always the people with airpods that are having audio trouble. i thought it was well known that apple has terrible bluetooth, at least on their macbooks.

So your definition of a democracy is a country where one political campaign cannot buy online advertising?
nikofeyn · 6 years ago
do you mind pointing out where i said anything close to that? you can always ask someone to clarify rather than arguing deceptively.

Just wait until the leadup to Election Day, Trump's campaign basically bought up YouTube's front page: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-21/donald-tr...

that’s truly sickening. the u.s. is not even pretending to be a democracy anymore.

here we go again. these corporations take no responsibility for any of their actions, are not held to even a modicum of responsibility, and do not care about anything other than money. they’re allowing objectively false ads to run rampant on their platform and force feeding them to people.

i hate trump with every bone in my body, view him as a traitor of the U.S., and hide all political videos and ads on youtube, and yet even i am seeing these ads. that tells me basically everyone is likely being force fed these ads. it’s scary.

I doubt the Chinese will take any rash, knee-jerk reaction here. They are very predictable and will stick to what is in their best interest. Since there is no democratic government either, these decisions are not at risk of changing - unless XiJinping loses a coop, which at this point is an impossibility.

if you think about it, we have reached a time in which we are all benefiting from china having a cool head about them and patience. it's really highlighting the power vaccuum that's happening.

I still cannot believe that Twitter bought Vine, couldn't figure out what to do with it, shut it down, then had to bring it back as a read-only archive because there was so much popular outcry.

At the time, the story was that all these other platforms like Instagram and Snapchat were adopting short videos, so Vine could not compete anymore. But obviously it was possible to compete, since an entirely new service--Tik Tok--was able to rise against them.

That said, I do think there may be a human-oriented life cycle to these sorts of social apps. Once a social platform is around long enough, it becomes the thing that old people use (since its original users grow older with it). Then the next round of teens seek a new platform--even if the functionality is the same--just so they can have it to themselves.

Under this theory, there's nothing Twitter could have done with Vine to make it beat Tik Tok, since a crucial feature of Tik Tok is simply that it's new.

The business strategy in the face of this theory would be to continuously start or buy new social platforms with similar feature sets, but each time with a new brand that is totally separate from the (older) parent brand so teens don't get scared off.

just as a note, tiktok was not an entirely new service. they bought and then transformed musical.ly.

it's amazing to me that the same group of people that consistently whine about unfair treatment of businesses and also china are likely the same group of people applauding the administration's taking tiktok hostage, forcing a sale with the threat of ban and wildly making up claims of what's owed to the government while u.s. companies swoop in to release competing features and for a bargain buyout.

I'm looking for a genuine honest answer here, this really isn't rhetorical. Every second thread regarding Apple seems to have top comments complaining about the quality of what Apple has become. The first I recall was the butterfly keyboard fiasco, then some others, then El Capitan and Big Sur bugs, then this.

Again, I really want to understand this: why the continued loyalty?

it's the blind hatred of the major alternative (windows).
