Not allowing something to exist is a really strange way of conceptualizing reduction of harm.

I'm perfectly fine eating something that was alive, so long as it was treated with respect and was killed humanely. Doing so connects you, a living being, to other living beings that are part of the circle of life, which live and die the same way you and I will.

Would you say the same thing about killing other humans for food? If not, why not?

>I find this very troubling for two reasons. First, while Claude and OpenAI are new, Google has been around for a long time. It should have thought better about pricing so that the tool is within the reach of the developing world.

Why? I don't see a practical argument for why Google would want to offer this service at a massive loss.

The author is making a moral argument, not a practical (from Google’s perspective) one.

Why do they have a young population? What happens to the old people who live in those countries? Why would that not happen in the receiving countries if enough people are imported?
niek_pas · a month ago
They have a young population because their birth rates are much higher than in (e.g.,) the U.K.

I am absolutely on board with the LLM inevitablism. It seems inevitable as you describe it. Everyone will use them everyday. Like smartphones.

I am absolutely not on board with AGI inevitablism. Saying “AGI is inevitable because models keep getting better” is an inductive leap that is not guaranteed.

Yes, people often conflate the two. ChatGPT is nice for some coding things and asking what you want for dinner. That does not mean we're all out of a job and our society has to be radically rethought.

Just out of curiosity how much calories compared to a human, does a model need for an hour?
niek_pas · a month ago
I am by no means an expert but I would imagine the answer to this question depends a lot on what you mean by 'a model'. Do you mean 'all of (e.g.) OpenAI's compute over an hour'?

The screenshots... wow!

To me, Mac OS X looks so much better than todays Mac OS. It looks clear and orderly and I feel like "Great in this environment I can get some work done!".

Current Mac OS feels like "Help, I fell into a sack of candies, how do I get out of here?" to me.

Does anybody else feel like that?

I had the same reaction looking at the screenshots. Sure it could use a new coat a paint (maybe not _everything_ needs to be gray) but the foundation is fantastically usable.

I haven’t looked at this in detail, but it seems they confuse “human-friendly syntax” with “absence of (<[{“.

It's not hard to set up nearly fault proof routines and reminders.

For example, I have a pill container for the days of the week. Pills go directly into my pocket and don't come out unless they're going in my mouth (almost always during breakfast.) The pocket to mouth routine makes sure I don't set them down somewhere and the pill box gives proof later that I took them.

It’s not hard _for you_.

Looks cool! One bug I found:

`curl www.google.com` works using 8.7.1 on macOS, but I get "Please enter a valid curl command" on your website.
