Unfortunately io_uring is disabled by default on most cloud workload orchestrators, like CloudRun, GKE, EKS and even local Docker. Hope this will change soon, but until then it will remain very niche.

can you back that claim up? i see a huge difference between orbstack and docker desktop but colima and orbstack use afaik the same technology and the performance was near identical in my tests. (Though you need to change the colima settings to vz and virtiofs)

I think I have just used the defaults. The difference was huge in regular use. E.g. simple test to upgrade OS packages and time that.

orbstack is just a vm provider for docker on mac, colima offers the same features without a ui and is a great open replacement but as neither supports podman both are not really relevant to the podman discussion.

”just” is a big statement here. Performance between colima and OrbStack are from different planets.

Apple just released their own runtime so that is also worth inspecting.

My thoughts exactly. LLMs are tools, and you should be able to draw your tools out of your toolcase whenever you need them. Kagi has a good implementation where AI doesn't obscure your search results, but it's one click away if you need it. If only Kagi had more reasonable pricing.

They make little profits for now so it sounds like reasonable. Defenitely worth it in the current unlimited tier. Not sure about the ultimate.

Not many people are willing to pay ~$300/year for an IDE. And Intellij didn't take any VC funding.

So at some point Zed will likely need to pursue monetization more aggressively than IntelliJ does now.

nicce · 3 days ago
The thing with taking VC funding is that your intention usually is not to steadily grow a sustainable product.

You take the funding so that you can outgrow the competitors and get the market faster. All you need is the small promise of innovation in an area which is somewhat new. At the beginning, the product is good enough and you have money to keep marketing and developing slightly faster than others. This will get you the users.

In the end, is your product at that point truly the best among competitors? It matters less, since you already have the users.

I think Zed didn’t need this one since they had a great product. Many would have been ready to pay at least a little. They could have grown slowly and see what works. With VC money take can go to completely wrong direction with giant steps and they are not noticing that unless it is too late. And then investors want returns.

Someone posted this in the other zed thread but it looks on par with VS Code in speed according to these results:

Depends how you measure it. At least my battery lasts hour longer when using Zed and when comparing to VSCode. Also, the link is almost 1,5 years old.

Yes, you grant the entity you've submitted a contribution to, to use (not own) your contribution in whatever it ends up in. That was the whole point of the developer's contribution right?

Without CLA, they can’t sell, for example, the code under different license, or be an exception themselves for the current GPL license requirements. But yeah, there might be some confusion with terms.

> Are they really boycotting jews now?

Just because they're boycotting someone who happens to be Jewish doesn't necessarily mean they're boycotting them because of it.

> Zed just announced that they are taking money from Sequoia Capital, which has a partner, Shaun Maguire, who has recently been publicly and unapologetically Islamophobic. It seems hard to believe that the team didn't know about this, as it was covered in the New York Times. In addition, Maguire has been actively pro-occupation and genocide in Palestine for nearly 2 years.

> How can anyone feel like the Code of Conduct means anything at all, when Sequoia is an investor? I'm shocked and surprised at the Zed team for this - I expected much better.

Reads like it has more to do with what they said and done in the past which seems reasonable.

Sounds like the timer is on. Right when Zed started to be really good.

If you own a pixel phone remember to do regular emergency call tests. They have a bug that has stuck around for generations but for some reason they get a pass.

One of the most important features of the phone. A huge reason to not buy if there is any uncertainty. You might die if it is not working.
