nemacol commented on My "Are you presuming most people are stupid?" test   andymasley.substack.com/p... · Posted by u/jger15

How many people drive their car daily or near daily? How many people are good drivers?

The ratio of those two values shows, in my experience, that a lot of people are not very good at things they spend a lot of time doing, and are generally unaware of their own shortcomings

The average American spends 4.2 hours a week in the car. A typical 40 year old american has driven around 50,000 miles. For someone to continue to be bad at driving after that much experience, it must be a fundamental limitation on their capabilities for learning, thinking, or understanding. Drive to work any given day in Denver and you will see that a large number of people suffer from those fundamental limitations.

This article seems to present a world where most people the author interacts with can think critically about a complex topic, and are interested in learning or improving themselves. I wish I lived where the author lives, because I have had multiple jobs across multiple countries and never encountered an average population like the author describes.

You said it yourself. Assuming people are doing something without being mindful and purposefully trying to improve then 50k miles on mental autopilot it is not a surprise that someone wouldn't get better at driving. Without a desire to improve and/or being involved in a process that would give feedback then there will be no growth.

As an almost-daily motorcyclist with 15k miles on my current machine (Suzuki DL650), I absolutely agree that the increased proportion of pickup trucks on the road increases the risks for riders, however I suspect it is mainly because the larger, heavier vehicles aggravate the effects of a general deterioration in driving skills and attitudes. One thing about riding a motorcycle is that you are, unless you have a death wish, an active and observant participant in what you are doing, which alone separates you from a seeming majority of those driving cars and trucks. You become much more aware of what others on the road are doing, and what they are doing, in large numbers, is acting like twits.

Driving crazily fast in residential areas, rolling through stop signs, blowing off yellow and even red lights, ignoring turn signals, aggressively tailgating cars, trucks, even motorcyclists like myself, tapping away at their phones and steering with their knees. I think I see just about every variation of all of these things at least several times a week, to the extent that I have thought about the idea of creating some kind of org or foundation or even just a blog to advocate a return to taking driving seriously. I don't have a lot of confidence that I could make a difference though. I suspect a lot of the problem is simply many more cars on infrastructure that we haven't put enough money into for decades, but I'm no expert.

Is that a measured observation? Not trying to nitpick - genuinely curious if this is your observation from experience or there are some studies that you are referring to.

Is it me or is the top interface oriented the wrong way? You want to have the big screen pointed away from the user and all of the top controls are facing/written to the audience.

Big fan of timelines. I am going to use this for sure

Have had an idea for a timeline search/visualization. Search a thing and that pulls pages and related pages with date/times from Wikipedia. With a zoom in/out to adjust resolution like google maps - weight nodes on timeline based on page views/edits/links. Have not gotten around to try to make something like it. I bring it up here just in case something already exists and I missed it.

nemacol commented on Apple mobile processors are now made in America by TSMC   timculpan.substack.com/p/... · Posted by u/colinprince

My understanding is it isn't a new factory. Wasn't the equipment moved from another operational factory so they could get up and running quicker?
nemacol · a year ago
AFAIK TSMC does not manufacture the machines they use to create processors so in any case they would be moving the equipment into a facility.

For context, there were 42,391 structurally deficient bridges in 2023.[0]

16 of the worst are in LA county and several see 300k trips daily, including one carrying the 405.[1]

EDIT: States with the least % of SD bridges: AZ, NV, TX, DE, and UT.

WV and IA have the most at almost 20% SD bridges respectively. (1 in 5!)

Awesome to see WV at the top of yet another list of shame.

While our state representatives are issuing a tax refund because we are "running a surplus"

This state is wild. I bet it will be the first to be merged with a nearby state because of poor governance.

Does not seem weird to me that you would start with the type of query you are writing.

Select, insert, update, delete, merge is the first word and says what you are doing.

If the keyword was in the middle of the query somewhere it would be harder to read.

I like the idea of a little keyboard that I can attach. But this is a replacement case so it is meant to be on all the time?

Some interesting layout choices. mostly ortholinear but not totally, double size enter key, same size backspace, tab, language globe.

Neato idea, glad to see interesting accessories coming out. This is a hard sell for me.
