Genuine question: why is there such an outpouring of love for him? I know he was a very successful investor, but what beyond that has garnered him the adulation of so many people?

Why? For the most part, people are overweight by choice, not by some unavoidable draw of Coke. Not to mention that they have a ton of zero or low calorie coke options that people could choose.

Many people are overweight by choice in the same way alcoholics or crack addicts are addicted to substances by choice. There are very powerful chemical and subconscious factors at play that make it incredibly difficult to exercise one's will. That semiglutides are proving to be remarkably effective at helping people both make better dietary decisions as well as reduce substance use, should tell you that the problem isn't as simplistic as you've made it out to be.

Look, there is ASI/AGI safety, and "please don't swear and scam and misinform, and be unbiased" safety. ASI/AGI safety is only a concern right now if you believe in foom, i.e. that an AGI would rapidly self improve to an ASI and extinction level threat. I think it is absurd to believe that because AI right now is compute limited and any first AGI will only be able to run on large data centers. The latter kind of saftey is way less dramatic than the former and can be dealt with on the level of products and deployment: Sue actors that harm others according to already existing laws, like fraud.

I don't mean to be facetious in any way, but how does AGI/ASI protect itself from humans simply pulling the plug?

I could never recommend this. I own a C1 and it's completely ruined by terrible software. On MacOS (various versions, on M1 and now M3), it stops randomly, needs regular reconnecting. I'm on an old version of the app because the new version doesn't even work at all (hard freeze after an hour).

Countless examples from forums and elsewhere of the same issues.

Shame, because the hardware is cool.

Echoing this. A bit miffed they've invested in an entirely new product without fixing the software issues of the C1.

Hi mate,

Life is long and we can restart our journey at any time, so no worries.

The best advice I could give is to start meeting people and (always!) learn new things.

Action on you: go to meetup.com, find three interesting events in your area, go there with no expectations, just listen and meet new people.

You are smart. You will work it out.

How do I realistically compete with those who are younger, more nimble, with impressive educational & professional backgrounds? The startup world seems to be far more of a status game nowadays than when I fell in love with it 15 years ago. What does someone with 0 social capital to open doors do, especially at this age?
