mwambua commented on Nvidia's new 'robot brain' goes on sale for $3,499   cnbc.com/2025/08/25/nvidi... · Posted by u/tiahura

My naive first reaction was that a unit like that would consume a way too much power to be practical on a robot, but then I remembered how many calories our own brains need vs the rest of our body (Google says 20% of total body needs).

Looks like power consumption for the Thor T5000 is between 30W-140W. The Unitree G1 (https://www.unitree.com/g1) has a 9Ah battery that lasts 2hrs under normal operation. Assuming an operating voltage of 48V (13s battery), that implies the robot's actuator and sensor power usage is ~216W.

Assuming average power usage is somewhere down the middle (85W), a thor unit would consume 28% of the robot's total power needs. This doesn't account for the fact that the robot would have to carry around the additional weight of the compute unit though. Can't say if that's good or bad, just interesting to see that it's in the same ballpark.

If you do set this up, consider also feeding data to non-commercial aggregators who make their data available for free and do not censor certain flights: https://github.com/rickstaa/awesome-adsb?tab=readme-ov-file#...

It's been a while since I ran a receiver, but back when I did ADSBExchange was pretty popular. It looks like there are a number of other options at the moment though - like ADSB.lol and airplanes.live

As others have said, the permissions required to make this work are scary and require a lot of trust.

The fact YouTube and Instagram don't allow you to disable endless algorithmic short form content is straight up evil.

I'd recommend just uninstalling the apps. I'm still able to get the content I need, and scroll mechanic doesn't work as well on the websites so a lot of the temptation to doom scroll goes away.

Still not high res enough to see the "complex three-dimensional (3D) vascularized tri-culture airway model".

Fair enough. I was hoping for more detailed photos too.

When I click on a link like this, I expect to see a massive high res image of a 3D-printed living lung tissue.

Why do none of these have larger displays? I imagine it's annoying to type without the ability to at least skim over the last page of content? Are larger monochrome displays just harder to procure?

I'm working in Quest 3 almost every day. I use Immersed, as it implements virtual displays for my MacBook better than others, but I'm impressed with the Meta ecosystem. Granted, social interaction is still awkward without proper face expressions, but it feels closer each year to the depicted vision.

I recently travelled and needed to work (coding and video editing in DaVinci) a lot in hotels and random places. I can't bring large screens everywhere (and I hate to work with small fonts and screens), and Quest 3 was a perfect fit here. Sometimes at home or office (I have a private one), I just don't want to sit on my buttoks all the time, so I put on VR goggles and can keep working in any position (lying on a sofa or even sunbathing outdoors).

As soon as new XR/MR glasses become lighter (there are some good ones already - Visor, Beyond BigScreen 2, etc), more and more people will discover how usable and optimized for work this tech is.

How do you power it for extended sessions? Is it constantly connected to power - using wifi/airlink between it and your Mac? Or do you use the link cable?

If you're looking to setup a GPS-disciplined time-server at home, I highly recommend this writeup: https://austinsnerdythings.com/2025/02/14/revisiting-microse...

In the author's latest post he also sets up a pi as PTP grandmaster: https://austinsnerdythings.com/2025/02/18/nanosecond-accurat...

Why do people strive to create such realistic environments when they're a much more realistic world outside? Although I understand the purpose from a fantastical-escapist perspective, I wonder if this sort of increasingly realistic escapism actually is reflective of how we're making the real world far worse than it ever was before and we're preparing an alternative world to escape into due to our destructive tendencies.

Simulation is a really useful tool for practice! I’m pretty sure this Hang Gliding sim uses Cesium for its environment: https://freeflightexperience.com/

I know people who will practice flying at unfamiliar sites on it first - so that they’re better prepared when they get to the real thing.
