mtbomb commented on Tani Adewumi is now a chess master   nytimes.com/2021/05/08/op... · Posted by u/Dangeranger

> Told that Tani needed a top chess coach to develop, the family scrimped and hired a grandmaster, Giorgi Kacheishvili, to coach Tani three times a week.

Honest question, could you be an effective chess coach if you're not a better chess player than the student?

[Edit] Tani has a rating of 2223 and Giorgi's rating is 2582, so it appears Giorgi is better

1. Tani is rapidly moving up the ranks. He's only 10. Presumably the rating difference was much larger just a few months ago.

2. 300 points is still quite a large rating difference.

3. In many disciplines the best practitioners are often not the best coaches. You might speculate that being the very best and most talented would make a worse coach since the struggle to increasing levels was easier.

4. Even Tiger Woods had a coach at his peak.

Pollution isn’t always something you can see or smell. Need a better counterargument than “ I don’t smell anything”
mtbomb · 6 years ago
It counters the author's argument that he smelled something.

This is anecdata. I live in Pittsburgh and have never had a smell issue. I've never had a coworker complain about this to me either. There's a good chance the author could have solved his smell issue by moving down the street to a different neighborhood.

I’m working on a similar project. We acquired our first land in Panama (http://Majagual.org)

We also are planning an alt-school system in which instead of going to college, you and 100 other students boot up a cooperative eco-village that you own outright. You’ve got food, shelter and community handled with no loans and then you can focus on other projects, research, etc.

Imagine running this coop with automation and robotics. You could free up more time while increasing the lifestyle of the members.

And of course, I already co-own a $50MM cooperative grocery store with about 16,000 others in NYC (FoodCoop.com)

It seems like an island in the tropics would be a poor choice for something like this. Mosquitos and difficult access to mainland services?
