It is for their online service, not the editor software.

For connecting two devices I already pay for a service allowing that, it's called ISP (Internet Service Provider).

How does Tailscale make money? I really like their service but I'm worried about a rug pull in the future. Has anyone tried alternative FOSS solutions?

Also, sometimes it seems like I get rate limited on Tailscale. Has anyone had that experience? This usually happens with multiple SSH connections at the same time.

mrsssnake · 25 days ago
Free personal tier is basically a cheap advertisement for them. You try Tailscale personally and get used to it, then it is very likely you would want to deploy it at your work seeing the benefits scaling even more with more people. And then they make money.

Which step in this logic do you not accept?

When profit for a company is in conflict with human good, regulation is needed (e.g. health and safety rules)

Facebook causes harm, disproportionately so for younger people

Meta is aware of this, but due to a profit motive does not take serious steps to do anything about it (only token efforts)

Meta (and other social media) needs regulation

mrsssnake · 25 days ago
Some regulation yes, throwing information agnostic universal global packet switching network in the trash bin is not the way.

> The only way to outlaw Meta’s dangerous and egregious behavior is to pass legislation, like the Kids Online Safety Act

Just last week there was uproar because Discord was going to require age verification to join adult themed servers and bypass content filters. This is how people are getting baited into inviting these restrictions and regulations into their services: By believing it’s necessary to hurt their enemies like Mark Zuckerberg combined with “think of the children”.

It’s still sad to these calls for extensive regulation and oversight getting upvoted so much on Hacker News.

Every time you see someone calling for regulation for kids online, remember that the only way to tell kids and adults apart is to force everyone to go through age verification. Before you start thinking that you don’t care because you don’t use social media, remember that you are reading this on a social media site. The laws aren’t going to care about whether or not you think Hacker News qualifies as social media.

The only way to get rid of domestic abusers in your neighbor is to detonate an atomic bomb at the town center.

Pangolin is dual licensed under the AGPLv3 and the Fossorial Commercial License. The community edition includes no commercial license code and is fully AGPL compliant. The enterprise edition is also free to use for personal use.
mrsssnake · a month ago
Yes but enterprise edition seems to be falsly advertised on the main site as open source. And the community and enterprise editions are mixed in the source code making compilations of community edition complicated.

Supported devices:

Xiaomi pad 5/6

Oneplus 6/6T

... That's it.

Does anyone know if there's plans for more? Is this project in very early stages, or is it going to be another Graphene OS with an extremely limited device support?

mrsssnake · a month ago
GrapheneOS has such low count of devices due to strict support for security features reasons.

These projects (Linux on mobile) are even more limited due to very poor support from the manufacturer for anything more than OEM and device specific build of Android, with lack of standards in mobile platforms. Every device support is reverse engineering effort. See https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Devices for the status of this effort.

> The Enterprise Edition is also open-source under the commercial license which enables free personal/small business use.

Open Source can be pair or commercial. But the license of these software Enterprise Edition, called "Fossorial Commercial License", is not Open Source. You tell who and how can use the software after the share/sell and call it Open Source.

The main site also advertises "Self Host: Enterprise Edition" as being "100% Open Source" which is simply not true and false advertising.

Imagine having to ask manufacturer to fix some tiny component of software with no way to fix it yourself, even if you had the skill and time capabilities.
