Is it worse than walking around 8 hours a day listening to music? Having headphones on while washing dishes and walking the dog?

I think it is, but it's hard for me to articulate without getting into teleological judgments.

Similar, but at least headphones uses fewer of your senses

> Space elevators are actually a possible idea being considered by scientists. > The hard part is making a strong enough cable. And finding enough elevator music...

Most engineers would bring up a lot more issues than just finding a strong cable. Also, most attempts with e.g. carbon nanotubes have been abandoned ages ago https://www.newscientist.com/article/2093356-carbon-nanotube....

- We don't have a good ascent mechanism other than rockets - and then we might just use rockets without building an elevator. - We don't have a good (and safe) descent mechanism. - Maintenance? Protection from space debris? Protection from oscillations? Ground-protection if the elevator collapses?

This is dyson-sphere level of fiction. We can do back-of-the-napkin calcualtions on how things would work, but the practicalities make it completely impossible or impractical.

Of course there is no direct causation between loneliness and death. You don't directly die from lack of social interaction, but you do directly die from lack of food. However, there is a clear causal link between loneliness and habits that increase mortality.

Do you not believe that mental well being is affected by loneliness? And that mental well being could affect mortality?

Stop writing about how you're going to do this, and just do it. Everything you need is available online.

Writing blog posts like this is a form of procrastination, and distracts from your stated goal.

mrkickling · 7 months ago
You might be right but I also think writing down your goals can be useful if you want to achieve them.

What is this "there no fish" thing? The blog link takes to a British show.

It says in the wikipedia article that the quote comes from the show.

Non tree plants still require you assume what a tree is.
mrkickling · 7 months ago
Ok, but all plants have leaves so you would only have to agree on what a plant is. You are trying to make a point but it makes no sense.

EDIT: you could also have totally separate definitions on what wood and leaves are without talking about trees or plants, don't you think?

You would think so. Or perhaps they chuck it to their kid as a freebie.

Goodie bags with phones and cameras etc are popular at celebrity events. Perhaps this is how the celebrity nudes get leaked?

Get free phone at party > go home and film a sex tape > featured on internet.

mrkickling · 4 years ago
The celebrity nudes (if you're referring to the fappening) were mainly phishing attacks from someone claiming to be icloud.

I believe this episode talks about it: https://darknetdiaries.com/episode/34/

I bought a Kobo Aura in 2013 or 2014. It handles epubs/mobis perfectly while PDFs are a terrible experience, but what impresses me is that the device works just as well as it did 8 years ago. The battery life is weeks or a month, the (modest) performance feels as good as when I bought it and no updates has screwed it up. I guess it is because it specializes in one specific task and tries to be nothing else than just that.

> Without rent control, those who are more wealthy can afford the housing, those who are poorer are out of luck.

I prefer that. It's not just about wealth, but also about how much you want to live there. I know people who earn about as much as me and spend > 30% of their net income on rent because they want to live in a trendy area. I don't need to live there, so I was able to choose differently and pay ~12% of my net income.

Also: with wealth, there's at least some correlation with merit. With a lottery, there's none.

mrkickling · 4 years ago
I feel a bit confused about what you mean with that it is not about wealth. If two people wants to live in a place as much and they both are ready to give 30% of their net income, the richer one would get the apartment in a system with no rent control, right? Your point only makes sense if everyone had the same net income.

Secondly, why is the merit of high income more valuable than waiting in the line for longest time? None of them is a lottery in my opinion.
