chbkall commented on Ask HN: What are some Linux tools to diagnose a system which keeps hanging?    · Posted by u/chbkall

Happened to me on what, if I recall correctly, was a thinkpad t61. In the end it was due to outdated BIOS. Updating it stopped the PC from hanging up.

Perhaps check that your BIOS is the latest version first.

And by the way run also a scan of the RAM with memtest.

The memtest86 routinely fails ... I guess that would be an issue with the RAM?

Thank you everyone for all your kinds words, advice (both cautionary and otherwise), resources, encouragement. Some of you also took the time to personally reach out to me and offer help. I had never intended the post to be read by so many people but I am truly grateful to each one of you who did so (and also took time to comment and email). I am also slightly embarrassed by so much attention.

There is lot to unpack from the comment threads below and I will be doing that in the coming days. As recommended by several of you, I have also added an RSS feed on my blog to help you follow my journey.

Thanks!

I was 37 last year when I finally got frustrated with my job and started to learn Python. Took a couple of open for all MOOC’s. Decided that damn this is cool and took math and alghorithm’s as well. Now I was accepted to the same university where a certain guy called Torvalds created Linux. I have written countless Python scripts and apps past year and am now learning C to actually make stuff I want to (OpenGL shaders, games, low code stuff, audio hardware). I also was diagnosed with ADHD some years ago. Therapy helped a lot to manage my issues in focus etc.

So it can be done! However, I had already been working as a tech (not programming though, more networks and sales tech support) for years, so it’s not like I had to learn what a CPU is.

This is very inspiring. I hope I get to walk down this path.

Where's the part where you became qualified to teach Math, Science and Computers to primary students after dropping out of school because of "competitive exams" (exams aren't a competition)?

I started teaching in a small village school (where they don't care about your qualifications if you are good at the subject and can teach). I did finish my college several years later.

Well, in my part of the world - there are entrance exams for good colleges which can be cut-throat.

For example - I wrote a script that automatically rsyncs a bunch of folders I care about to one external HD, and then replicates the backup to a different external HD for backup purposes.

That sort of thing that would require you to run a bunch of commands and that you have to do from time to time. Automating it to a single script is cool.

I have a friend that wrote a bot to track the prices of stuff that he wants to buy and messages him on Telegram the current price and the min/max since it started running. Another fun little project.

Ah. This definitely sounds exciting and makes me think.
