If AI can't make AI improvements that humans can, then it shouldn't be considered a very capable coder.

Given the excitement on X right now about this, I don't understand how this is not in the front page already :)

Anthropic's Claude is still not available in Canada either. Anyone have insight into why its difficult to bring these AI models to Canada when on the surface its political and legal landscape isn't all that different from the US?

Right but Bard is literally available in 230 countries and territories...but not Canada.

Only in America things like this can happen.

A whole industry bootstrapping itself to make semi-conductors doubling every 18 months, going from exotic, mission critical hardware to commodity; SpaceX is doing the same thing with flight hardware. Contrast that with previous generation engines (the RS-25 comes to mind) with a sticker price of 125 millions... per engine! [0]

I find it amusing how all the news reports gloss over the fact that the FBI somehow got access to the wallet’s private key.

I’m also wondering why the hackers didn’t request payment in a currency that’s more difficult to trace.

Slightly suspicious. Them wanting to get a message out there that criminals won't get away with far exceeds probability of them retrieving crypto imo.

I sincerely doubt that building towers lead to an increase in costs in the existing housing stock, unless something very strange is afoot.
mpg33 · 5 years ago
Cost of building a tower is much more than something like rowhouses, multiplexes. Cities like Toronto and Vancouver bypass the "missing middle". So it's mostly single family homes with various "tower node districts".

It's handy to say "nowhere is building" but it's not really supported by the data. Look at Dallas and Houston compared to San Francisco. https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=B6Tc

Texas is also a good example of that density only matters if there is a land scarcity problem.

There are areas in Canada where building massive towers has been premature and also led to increase in costs.

Torontonian here.

Lack of details and vagueness describes all the communication about sidewalk lab's project, not just this article.

If I had to guess the reporter doesn't really know and can't really find out.

Note that from the quotes in this article this most recent iteration seems to be a surprise to the city as well.

I'm not sure Google knows either. "Smarty city" just smacks of vague buzzwordy-ness idealism. What is it exactly? Are you just going build some condos and stick some wifi around? How is that really different than any other modern city?
mpg33 commented on Canada's forests emit more carbon than they absorb   cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar... · Posted by u/colinprince
GhostVII · 7 years ago
I don't think this should be too surprising. Forests don't destroy carbon, just store it in the form of trees. When the trees decompose, or burn down, it is released again. So for a mature forest you would expect it to have around net 0 emissions. As far as I know the main way a forest can be a carbon sink is if it is expanding, which I don't think Canada's forests are doing.

You'd think large forest fires would have an impact though in terms of the regrowth.
