I think we head in a direction where people will not trust digital content altogether. The question is what will happen thereafter? What are new and reliable trust indicators?

I'm still working on Habitat. It's a free and open source, self-hosted platform for communities to discover their local area. The plan is for it to be federated, but that's a while off yet. I've made some good progress recently. I've added the ability to temporarily freeze user accounts, custom WYSIWYG editing for sidebar content and functionality that allows the administrator to set site-wide announcements to appear and disappear at specific dates/times. I also got some great feedback from users of my instance of it for my local town and so fixed some bugs.

I often wonder how much creative productivity is lost on a societal level because of the phone addiction.

I often wonder if we would focus politically on different topics.

I often wonder if I would procrastinate less in the real world and face important decisions much faster.

... but when I do, I let it write regex, SQL commands, simple/complex if else stuff, apply tailwind classes, feed it my console log errors, propose frontend designs ... and other little stuff. Saves brain power for the complex problems.

I don't buy the idea that Musk is doing this as some sort of branding play. I think he genuinely believes in what he says; his beliefs have just shifted over the past few years, notably after COVID.

Speaking of COVID. There is a weird story about Musk betting $1 million dollars on low death cases of COVID against his former friend Sam Harris.

After Elon was spectacularly wrong he just canceled the friendship. Also forgot to pay the $1 million dollars.

Absurd that 2021-2024 saw massively more shootings than 1966-2020 combined. Clearly it’s getting out of hands. What’s the reason behind this huge rise?

No one knows for sure, but if I take the perspective of a socially alienated young person who is angry, resentful, and feels a growing desire for revenge, I would say hours of screen time, social media dynamics [1], and widespread economic insecurities only worsen the situation. It is easy to become resentful and aggressive when you are isolated and feel left behind. Additionally, it is much easier to become radicalized as an isolated individual online. I believe that in the last century, it was more difficult to become radicalized from your own bedroom, and people had more social interactions, even if they weren't actively seeking them out.

I tend to agree with the author. But then, look around: a lot of stuff works really really well.

I like this very much. Why?

1. Life long habits are mostly formed at a young age.

2. Real social interaction is very important at this life stage.

3. There is no need to put the vulnerable self concept of a young human being at risk.
