mikeleung commented on Why Child Care Is So Expensive   theatlantic.com/ideas/arc... · Posted by u/jseliger

The thing with female workforce participation: isn't it just symptom of the society getting poorer. My wife worked her ass off. I was making about 130k / year. She was making about 60k / year. Then we not only moved from the US to Poland (where live is just so much cheaper). But I also started making about 330k / year. All the willingness to work evaporated on her part :-) Instead we have another kid. She stopped talking about work and started talking about having more kids. Of course, that's anectodal, but also common sense, isn't it?

My little theory is that while men still made enough money to support good life in the US (50s, 60s) most women just didn't want to work. If you can have a house, nice car, four kids, vacation home, 40 hour week, no credit card debt, no school debt, and all of that on carpenter salary -- why not to enjoy life instead of spending 50-60 hours at the office?

The dirty secret is that most women work because they HAVE TO. It's not a choice. It's sold to the society at large as something glamorous because -- what? They're going to tell the truth? Yeah, you need to work your ass off 50-60 hours a week, with credit card debt, student loan debt, two cars loan, etc, etc. just to be able barely make it to have two kids at 35 ? Because before that you need advanced degree or two. Actually both of you do... I mean how is that a better deal?

I can see that also from the reaction of my wife friends who stayed in the US working to basically help their husbands as one salary won't cut it. It's not like they wouldn't prefer to stay at home with kids. But, again, it's not like they have a choice.

I'm terrified by the fact that this sexist reply is currently the top comment on this thread, so clearly there are many people voting it up, in addition to the fact that many men(and only men) adding their personal takes about how they know why WOMEN make the choices they do.

No wonder there is so much gender inequality in the workplace.

This does not belong on HN.

This reminds me of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw (2007) Johnny Lee's demonstration using head tracking with infrared led's and a wii remote to implement the same thing. Obviously that limits the effect to the individual's head being tracked, but its amazing its been 12 years since that demo and we're still trying to commercialize the same affect.

Apple and MSFT do not belong in that list at all. Google remains to be seen, but they’re doing just fine. Apple has demonstrated time and again the ability to innovate in the hardware space, even if you find their products overpriced like I do. And MSFT has so many different extremely successful products they’re totally unkillable.

While they are all long lived, they have had incumbents come in and eat (*some) of their lunch.

MSFT missed the boat on mobile and have given up from a HW standpoint. Apple missed the boat on the cloud (tbd if they can catch up). Google missed the boat on social.

Interestingly, the photo of his Congo passport shows his date of birth as December 12, 1982. But, the article and Wikipedia states his date of birth as December 12, 1972.

that's a fake passport, hence the alias 'Solotshi'

Is their intention to set a precedent with a sympathetic court?

I know a lot of other actions around the country are pushing the limits, hoping to get a favorable ruling and establish precedent (see: case vs. ACA being unconstitutional).

They are looking to be the test case to set a precedent in order to force clarity around securities laws that are outdated and unclear when being applied to cryptocurrencies

Orcas eating just the sharks liver is interesting, they have been known to eat only the tongue of whales, leaving the rest of the carcass. I'm guessing for similar reasons, tongue being tasty and highly nutritious to them.

This known behavior was used by whalers who had a pact with a group of orca in Eden, South Wales. In exchange for helping the whalers hunt baleen whales, the whalers would leave the tongue of the whale to the orcas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_whales_of_Eden,_New_Sou...

They say that iCloud Keychain on iOS 12 and Safari 12 have implemented this feature.

And sure enough, https://www.icloud.com/.well-known/change-password

Looking through the referenced RFC, there's a whole raft of "well known" urls that are registered

https://www.iana.org/assignments/well-known-uris/well-known-...

How widely adopted are these?

mikeleung · 7 years ago
looks like the change was proposed by an apple WebKit developer:

https://github.com/hober

which would explain why apple has implemented it...

There are side effects to be aware of taking curcumin together with other medications:

"Medications for diabetes (Antidiabetes drugs) Interaction Rating: Moderate Be cautious with this combination. Talk with your health provider. Turmeric might decrease blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. Diabetes medications are also used to lower blood sugar. Taking turmeric along with diabetes medications might cause your blood sugar to go too low. Monitor your blood sugar closely. The dose of your diabetes medication might need to be changed.

Some medications used for diabetes include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others."

Turmeric might slow blood clotting. Taking turmeric along with medications that also slow clotting might increase the chances of bruising and bleeding.

Medications changed by the liver (Cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) substrates) Interaction Rating: Moderate Be cautious with this combination. Talk with your health provider. Some medications are changed and broken down by the liver. Turmeric might decrease how quickly the liver breaks down some medications. Taking turmeric along with some medications that are broken down by the liver can increase the effects and side effects of some medications. Before taking turmeric talk to your healthcare provider if you take any medications that are changed by the liver.

Some medications that are changed by the liver include some calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, nicardipine, verapamil), chemotherapeutic agents (etoposide, paclitaxel, vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole), glucocorticoids, alfentanil (Alfenta), cisapride (Propulsid), fentanyl (Sublimaze), lidocaine (Xylocaine), losartan (Cozaar), fexofenadine (Allegra), midazolam (Versed), and others."

Spring assist folding knives don't meet the NY definition of a gravity knife even though they are easier to deploy than many thumb stud knives. They can be purchased in the city.
mikeleung · 8 years ago
"Under Penal Law 265.01, a gravity knife is defined as any knife that opens with “the force of gravity or the application of centrifugal force” and has a blade that locks into place by means of a “button, spring, lever, or other device.”

Courts have interpreted that to mean that any knife that can be opened with a “wrist flick” — a movement something like what a fan dancer might do — qualifies as a gravity knife. A long list of court cases have turned on exactly that question, which seems straightforward enough."

I think spring assisted folding knives do meet this definition, and the article also does mention many folding knives sold in the city also meet this definition
