mijoharas commented on Getting a Gemini API key is an exercise in frustration   ankursethi.com/blog/gemin... · Posted by u/speckx

The difficult process is on purpose. You're too small. You're just going to waste their customer support resources and only give them maybe a couple hundred dollars. They're hoping you give up and go away.

We're a reasonably sized company. Recently we needed to change our google cloud payment details.

Finance users had changed in the meantime, so I navigate and create an iam user, ok, billing administrator is a thing, great.

Oh, they said it didn't work? alright, there seems to be a project billing administrator as well as an organisation billing administrator? weird, ok let's try that.

Hmm... it still didn't work? let's look around a little more. Ok, within the billing account (that they're a billing administrator to) and within the organisation (that they're a billing administrator to) there is a tab called "payment users". This seems to be _separate_ from their IAM users, and the person needs to be added there (as well as? instead of? who knows) and _then_ they can change the card details.

UX is especially crap here (for google cloud billing).

Let's not even get started on the whole vertex vs. aistudio stuff. Also when one of the gemini's came out their python library worked while their curl docs, and their ruby client didn't so we had to read the source of the python library to figure out what it actually did under the hood to test it out. (this was a while ago, I think they might've gotten better since but the documentation/devex was really bad at at the time)

I have a large rails app that was plagued with slow specs using factory_bot. Associations in factories are especially dangerous given how easy it is to build up big dependency chains. The single largest speedup was noting that nearly every test was in the context of a user and org, and creating a default_user and default_org fixture.

there's a profiler that can show you what to focus on, probably fprof here: https://test-prof.evilmartians.io/ (been a while and I don't remember exactly what I used)

(now maybe that's what you used to see what was causing the slowdown, but mentioning to for others to help them identify the bottlenecks.)

Docker + Immich + Tailscale is the killer replacement to Google & Apple Photos, it's simply that simple
mijoharas · 10 days ago
So, I wanted to use tailscale for a few local services in my home, but I run a few of them on the same device, and have a simple reverse proxy that switches based on hostname.

Afaict I can't use a tailnet address to talk to that (or is it magic dns I'm thinking about? it was a while since I dug in). I suppose I could have a different device be an exit node on my internal network, but at that point I figure I may as well just keep using my wireguard vpn into my home network. I'm not sure if tailscale wins me anything.

Do other people have a solution for this? (I definitely don't want to use tailscale funnel or anything. I still want all this traffic to be restricted like a vpn.)

https://github.com/7mind/nix-config/blob/main/modules/hm/dev... , the firejail version can be found in git history.
mijoharas · 12 days ago
Thanks! Would you recommend bubblewrap over firejail, and if so, how come?

Claude happily does the same on daily basis, run all that stuff in firejail!
mijoharas · 15 days ago
have you got a specific firejail wrapper script that you use? Could you share?

Why should we be trusting this centralized service? I regret getting my family onto Signal as I would love to get there somewhere where we control our data & aren’t reliant on US-based service. When you look at the EU’s Chat Control law that’s trying to be pushed, the easiest target is going to be big, centralized services in jurisdictions friendly to the EU—it’s gonna be real hard doing this with a decentralized protocol. Signal deserves just as much criticism as any other thing operating out of California.
mijoharas · 17 days ago
Two questions:

* Do you know of anything better?

* Do you not trust the Signal Organisation? They've aren't able to subvert their encryption on the servers, and have publicly stated that they will leave a region before integrating client-side scanning. I for one believe them, since it's their raison d'être.

I'm interested in the embeddings models suggested. I had some good results with nomic in a small embedding based tool I built. I also heard a few good things about qwen3-embedding, though the latency wasn't great for my usecase so I didn't pursue it much further.

Similarly, I used sqlite-vec, and was very happy with it. (if I were already using postgres I'd have gone with that, but this was more of a cli tool).

If the author is here, did you try any of those models? how would you compare the ones you did use?

Importing an SVG will require support for Bézier curves, which is a tough lift mathematically.
mijoharas · a month ago
looks like they've got some support for bezier's internally (and they allow exporting SVG's) so I assume the building blocks should be there? I definitely have no idea, and haven't looked into it though.

Another opensource CAD tool to look at is Dune 3D: https://dune3d.org/

which has been discussed here in the past:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40228068

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41975958

which if it just had parameters/scripting would have a lot more potential.

mijoharas · a month ago
I was somewhat excited about it, but one feature I wanted for the thing I was doing at the time was importing an svg, which it didn't support at the time (and from a cursory github search still doesn't support?).

It's a shame, because it looks really nice. Maybe I'll check it out for the next thing I do where that's not a requirement. Might be a shame since I've finally learnt how to (basically) use freecad now!

Bottles is essentially a frontend for Wine, it lets you put every single app to its own WINEPREFIX, so that each one can have their own settings, C: drive, etc.

If you've heard of Lutris, Bottles is essentially the same thing, but aimed at general software instead of only focusing on games
