I am assuming the target market for this is European short haul flights?

On something like a New York <-> Los Angeles flight I cannot imagine the turboprop beats a 737 in any performance or comfort category.

The article is not about turboprop but about open-rotor engines which are a modern variation of propfan engines.

Russia has also just modernized their IL-114s and got an order from India.

Those are turboprop like the A400m or C-130. The article is about open-rotor engines which are a modern variation of propfan engines.

The problem with solar isn't the night. Getting enough batteries to cover that is totally doable. The issue is the winter. And not even because of fewer daylight hours - on sunny winter days there is usually still a good amount of solar.

The problem is its often very cloudy in the winter. In the UK in winter we regularly have periods of 5 cloudy days in a row where solar output is virtually zero.

I don't know what the answer to that is. In a calm cloudy winter week all renewables and battery storage are totally screwed. Space based solar is a scam. Maybe we just have to live with it until fusion works (if it ever does).

(But it's still academic at the moment because we're still far from the point where building more renewables is a bad idea.)

> In a calm cloudy winter week all renewables and battery storage are totally screwed. Hydro doesn’t really care about a calm cloudy winter week and is the reason my state was 100% renewable last year. So it’s definitely not a problem for ALL renewables.

Mechanically sure, but I still feel way safer when a Tesla (of any kind) is approaching me as a pedestrian or bicyclist than any other vehicle (except maybe Waymo) because I know they will alert the driver and brake if necessary. Any other car, especially older trucks, I'm quite afraid of, based on experience.

Are collision avoidance system and automated emergency braking not standard in the US? Here in Switzerland basically every new vehicle has them.

Right at this moment Germany's electricity mix has 364gCO2eq/kWh carbon intensity, France is at 21. That is because 37% of Germany's production comes from gas and coal.

Even from an environmental standpoint, France is doing much better than Germany and that is thanks to nuclear.

Also, by closing operating power plants, Germany weakened European energy production at the time when we geopolitically need it the most.

Ironically that was France which needed to shut down a lot of its nuclear reactors in 2022 and 2023 due to repairs. So according to your own logic France "weakened European energy production at the time when we geopolitically need it the most."

Here in Switzerland the reason given for the "energy crisis" was also mostly France as Switzerland usually imports a lot of energy from France.

It’s $104k+ to house a senior? Is that in line with what it costs in other countries?
micwag · a year ago
It's in line with very high COL countries like Switzerland, but higher than most other OECD countries.

The biggest cost factor is also not the housing itself but care/nursing.

If it has 33% net efficiency that sets it back 3 times compared to batteries right from the outset. With stainless steel pressure vessels needed here and hydrogen precautions, not holding my breath.

This is for seasonal energy storage with only 1 charge and discharge per year. It competes with water reservoirs not with batteries.
