remember when JLCPCB became popular a few years ago and completely flipped hobby electronics upside down? I don't know how possible it is but it would be really cool if that happens in a few years with semiconductors. it's kind of mad that they've dominated our lives since the 1970s but you can only make them if you're a large company with millions of dollars (or several years, a big garage and lots of equipment as seen here). or tiny tapeout.

It's not technologically feasible unless plastic aka flexible ICs take off.

I'm honestly surprised nobody tried to capitalize on the early 2000s Java hype by making some kind of Java box (there were a few things labeled as a Java OS or a Java workstation but none of these were really a "Java Machine")

Azul Systems was making Java machines a while ago.

One thing that I have found Duolingo helpful for is kana and kanji practice in Japanese. It's better than flashcards in that it also gives you stroke order.

When did they add that? When I was trying to learn Japanese 6-7 years ago Duolingo didn’t have anything for either kana or kanji…

It would be interesting to see copies of this from subsequent years (this is the 2012 edition) to understand how Valve's process has evolved over time.

I remember reading or hearing somewhere that this was a one-off thing, but I can't remember where.

EDIT: Another comment mentioned Chet Faliszek, he was probably the source.

It should be RISC-V... who is in charge at Intel??

Is this related to the rumors of softbank (ARM) money injection in Intel?

mepian · 4 months ago
Intel demonstrated a RISC-V chip called Horse Creek two years ago.

Random question: where did the ARM core design come from?

And yet they’re wildly successful, including the wide level of adoption of their open source projects like React.

Meta’s profit per employee is over $250,000, higher than Qualcomm. There is no Meta competitor in any of their verticals that has a larger customer base.

It seems to me that your definition of “software quality” and “lost cause” is factually wrong based on the metrics of success that matter.

And in any event, it is an engineer’s tunnel vision fallacy to believe that software quality is the most important factor to stakeholders. People will prefer buggy/slow software that solves their problem over fast/stable software that fails to solve their problem.

> higher than Qualcomm

That’s a pretty low bar for a software company.

My prediction is a handful of laid off employees will fork the repo and resurrect within a month with new branding.
mepian · 5 months ago
The laid off employees will move on to a new full-time job, your fork will have to find maintainers somewhere else.

I’d expect the fabs to get spun off at some point a la AMD/GlobalFoundries.
mepian · 5 months ago
AMD/GF spin-off was backed by Saudi money, who is going to pay this time?
