mech4bg commented on New Work by Gary Larson   thefarside.com/new-stuff... · Posted by u/jkestner

I think it’s about time for me to confess: I really don’t get Gary Larson cartoons. I understand what each is about, but my amusement level doesn’t correlate with their popularity.

It’s a slightly odd, somewhat lonely feeling to see something so universally beloved and popular and feel nothing.

Neither did Homer if it makes you feel better.

(Obviously not the only one if not getting Far Side comics made the Simpsons!)

Hello --- I made this! Thank you for the kind words.

I have, BTW, just received a $6.50 watch with touchscreen, microphone and speaker, much better build quality, BT 3, 4.2 and 5, plus the traditional fake heart rate sensor and a bigger battery with an actual label on it. It's powered by a YC1133 which contains an ARM Cortex M0 with 56kB RAM and 4MB flash. This would be an awesome device for hacking if there was any information about it whatsoever.

Weirdly, it runs a more complex version of what's clearly the same software stack as the LT716!

My friend wrote Micropython so I’ve passed this along to him! Very cool.

I saw some people wondering if there will be more shows - my kids use the iView app and a VPN to watch Bluey (which has been handy to get access early to new episodes!) and they've been advertising they'll be doing a long-form 28 minute episode this year.

This is because most B2C apps have realized that bug reports are pretty much worthless and cost more time to sift through than any potential upside. Why report bugs when you have crash handlers, telemetry, and detailed logs of everything every user does in the app. Your metric dashboards and reports can actually see and measure issues that actually affect the business.

Not an unfair point, although it is alarming at work how many bugs end up being reported directly from customers.

>At DoorDash, we take app startup speed extremely seriously. We are obsessed with optimizing our customers' experience and making continuous improvements.

I wonder if they actually believe this? They make it almost impossible to report bugs in the app, and when I have customer support's reaction has been "there's not really anything I can do about this."

I have 128 GB of non-ecc memory in my notebook, never detected a single error, and has been on 24/7 for more than 4 years.

Unless you live over 4000 meters over the sea level, like to compile while flying or live close to an unshielded nuclear reactor, you don't need ECC.

And most memory problems you can fix by better cooling, and better shielding.

My 4 year old Mac Mini had been showing some flakiness and finally I got an error about "hash mismatch detected on volume" - ran memtest and sure enough the RAM had gone bad. I rely on this machine for all my media, backups, etc, goodness knows what data I may have lost while the RAM was bad. It's a moderately common problem, found plenty of people with the same issue.

RSUs are only taxed when the company is liquid, not when they are vested (which is one and the same post IPO).

So the tax free options are really just locking in long term cap gains. Of course the con is that it’s not actual compensation as the stroke will be equal to the present valuation.

mech4bg · 4 years ago
That’s not true. It depends on the RSU structure. We’ve had both types at my company.

Also FWIW the company can withhold some shares as they vest but max 22% for federal.

I'm 50+, and perhaps I've just been lucky...but its not been an issue for me. I got my last job 18 months ago and I'm looking now. I think a lot of what people think is ageism, is wageism.. but that's just a hunch.

In my experience, if you work in areas with enough demand - its not an issue (eg you work the 'ends' of tech - really old or really new). If the demand isn't there, they probably don't want to pay for a senior employee when a fresh college grad could do it for half the cost ?

Anyway - fear not for your 40s or even your 50s!! Old geeks never die...

we just 'exec' a new program! :-D

Off topic, but this is the first time I’ve seen your username. I would love to compare sometime how we both came to such similar kinda odd usernames, haha.
