> A couple months ago, I saw people everywhere online (including HN) saying they love the idea of social media bans for kids.

The funny thing is hearing adult people shouting aloud that kids suffer from social media use and bla bla bla let the same people have been ruining their own relationship with their life partners, family and even their whole life for years by spending way too much time in front of TV, computers and by doomscrolling all day on instagram and tiktok.

I don't understand how these people are all acting as if only children need to be saved. Banning stuff to children won't even work if the only example they have of adulthood are people with a hunchback staring lifelessly at a small screen on the palm of their hand all day.

I think you are 100% right. Let's ban social media for all ages and wipe this scourge from the planet.

Been working on https://www.stainedglassatlas.com.

Trying to document and map as much of the publicly accessible stained glass as possible. The goal being the next time you visit a new city or town, you'll know where all the beautiful stained glass is to go see. Just recently added support for countries outside of North America. No exciting tech (vanilla HTML/CSS/JS). But excited for folks to check it out!

> Maybe we're too focussed on ourselves, maybe our community has broken down, maybe we don't consider each other real fellow humans.

I think this is unquestionably a problem in modern society. Too many interactions are purely transactional. People are isolated and lonely. Many people are only out for themselves. Community has definitely broken down

I don't know how to fix this and I'm definitely part of the problem, but I think it is a very big problem

This is essentially the premise of Bowling Alone. The solution is not easy, but it is simple. We as individuals need to rebuild community in our towns and cities. Start a club, start a pickup soccer game that meets regularly, join existing fraternal societies that are aching for new members or start your own new society. Volunteer at your local food bank regularly.

If you know your neighbors, you are less likely to run them down on your e-bike.

I work for one of those “evil” email software companies. Part of our business is external marketing and the much larger part of our business is internal employee communications. For over 15 years we kept track of the number of people who used HTML emails and the number of people who opted for plain text emails. It was something in the realm of 0.1% of all mail recipients had opted for plain text. That was in 2015. Today, that number would probably be even lower. So we stopped offering multipart emails entirely because the cost/benefit analysis doesn’t add up.

HTML emails aren’t sent only because that’s what the senders want. They are sent because that’s what the recipients want.

I would argue that the fatal flaw of this idea is that it is an online app. If this was solvable with technology, Meetup.com has a 15 year head start on you and they didn't solve it.

I think technology is antithetical to the goal you are working toward. Instead, start a local group and have a "all cellphones go here" basket when members enter so that when they are there, they are fully engaged and not doom scrolling the entire time.

They still exist where I am, and are desperate for members, because their memberships tend to have an average age probably over 60. Some new blood could really invigorate them, but they have trouble finding any.

I sometimes wonder how my grandparents' generation, who were generally hard-working farmers and tradesmen, and who raised large families relative to today, found the time to maintain all those groups along with their churches. Different priorities, I guess, and that was not only before the Internet, but before TV really took over.

I've looked into all of these orgs and every single one of them requires the belief in a "God". That has to be a huge turn off to a lot of younger people who might have been interested in joining for the social parts of the group. All of them lost any interest from me because I'm not going to take an initiation oath claiming to believe in a God that I don't believe in.

If they really want new members, they need to self-reflect on antiquated requirements that might turn off younger people from joining their organization.

I mean I already can't find what I'm looking for because everything is so SEO'd to hell and back that rather than seeing what I've searched for, I see what makes Google the most money.

I'm as anti-AI as anyone, but what's the difference between LLM garbage and SEO garbage?

Working on a site to help people find stained glass windows to visit in their towns/cities. No exciting tech (vanilla HTML/CSS/JS) and lots of data entry, but making some decent progress!
