I have always thought this association is partly from some intuition we have about the mechanical and acoustic properties of hypothetical things that would have this shape.

The shape with sharp, jagged edges would occur in real life if it were made of some hard material, perhaps, like glass, metal, etc. The shape with the soft, curvy lines would occur if it were made of something softer and possibly elastic.

It doesn't take much intuition to guess that the sharper shape will produce a sound closer to "ki," with sharp transients and lots of high frequencies - like a piece of glass or metal falling - and the rounded one perhaps closer to "bou," with softer transients and perhaps a time-varying resonant frequency as the shape is malleable (think of the sound of a drop of water landing).

The effect is somehow also visible in the shapes of the letters, with ‘B’, ‘O’ ‘U’ being rounded and soft. The letters ‘K’ and ‘I’ are made of sharper shapes featuring triangles and lines. I wonder if letter designs were influenced by the sounds made by objects.

Why not something akin to "fixed-offset cursor"? Actual cursor/pointer is always a centimeter above the finger position (thus always visible [bottom of the screen to be handled as a special case]), and finger movements manipulate position, while hold duration accesses alternate modes.

For a somewhat similar implementation (touchscreen is essentially handled as touchpad) look at how Teamviewer handles remote sessions to Windows desktop from smartphones.

I would really like any/all of those as a toggle-on mode for use on Android itself... selecting text with arthritis fingers is a pain – literally and figuratively.

Try out the app Quick Cursor[1] it does a lot of what you describe. Pretty intuitive too, you build muscle memory for it quickly. 1: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.quickcurso...

Small, important things like this and support for 'live photos' keep me in Apple's embrace.

The 'memories' feature of of Apple Photos is frankly amazing.

It looks like PhotoPrism does have Live Photos support, but I haven't tried it myself.

This is great; I had a thought that something similarly writable on tablets, but designed for tabletop RPGs would be great. The best of both worlds.

I use 5e Companion App on my phone, and find the interface is great. I have a Boox Note that I would love to have a way of tracking dynamic info (like spells) with the ability to write or erase overtop for things like notes, or maybe even HP...

I'm not exactly sure how it would work, but does anyone know if there is something like this out there? Some aspects could be handled through PDF links I suppose.

You might be interested in Ink and Switch's 'Inkbase' [1] concept. I'm not sure it's ready for Android tablets yet, but it seems to have a lot of potential for 'programmable' ink like you're describing.
