Recently tried multiple terminals because I am gradually migrating off of Macs and I liked Ghostty but the lack of searching the scrollback has turned me away from it. Opening another editor to do the same I tried but didn't like.

WezTerm has everything I need and is closest to iTerm2, minus being able to quit it and have it restore all windows and tabs on restart -- but oh well, it's not an important enough feature. It also renders my prompt perfectly; no small pixel divergences like all other terminals have.

Kitty I don't remember why I rejected.

Alacritty I like but the lack of tabs is not acceptable for the moment... and before you ask: I hate tmux. So much more key presses to achieve basic functionality, it boggles my mind why people love it. But, to each their own obviously.

It's also likely I'll settle for some Linux-exclusive terminal but as I'm not yet possessing a Linux workstation (just a laptop) I haven't put the requisite time to do this research.

Suggestions are welcome.

there's scrollback search in the nightly build if that's an option for you (I've been using it a ton for a few months and haven't seen any bugs so far):

> Convoy had no exits because their only potential acquirers are in the same industry and are also getting completely crushed.

Some great insights here and you clearly know the business. I’m curious about this last statement however. Just how badly are other players doing?

Uber Freight just announced a major overhaul on a foundation apparently provided by their acquisition of Transplace [1]. There seem to be a number of synergies between Convoy and Uber Freight although I may be naive about that. In any case, I’m curious about your view on Uber Freight and whether they are viable or simply playing the long game based on deep capital reserves, and why you think they didn’t acquire Convoy (if that even makes sense as a possibility).

Uberfreight is also doing very poorly. From my understanding the Transplace acquisition was somewhat of a merger/UF trying to get out of only the 3PL business and Uber is just trying to get UF's losses off their books. There are not as many synergies as you might think due to the way freight brokerages and their deals with shippers+carriers work. One reason UF didn't acquire Convoy: it only makes sense for a brokerage to acquire another brokerage if they can get more customers (shippers) from that acquisition. But most customers of UF are also customers of Convoy, and are splitting their loads amongst multiple brokers to diversify risk and commoditize brokerages. So if you're a shipper giving 20% of your business to Convoy and 20% to Uber Freight, you won't turn around and give 40% of your business to UF now that they've acquired Convoy, you'll just go find another broker to give your business to.

Tbf, as someone who's never read or heard of the book, it just seemed like an interesting quote about a hypothetical future for humanity. Definitely didn't occur to me it might be a spoiler.

I haven’t read any of them, but from what I’ve heard of the plot of the first, it seems reasonable to want a spoiler tag here

I sortof exaggerated, they did have an Android app but basically invested nothing in it. I remember that just before FB cloned them (in literally every place they could) they were talking about how iOS was all that mattered, as those users are richer.

They didn't seem to get that you either need to show user growth or revenue growth, and failed at both.

Yeah it was pretty well documented that Snap's behavior on Android (literally taking a screenshot of the viewfinder) was way worse than on iOS, and features like e.g. video would always come out on iOS before Android

> In the end, the best thing we can do is to insulate ourselves and our loved ones from government intervention, focus on local politics, and take control of our own consumption i.e. we can't rely on the government to do what's best for our children.

We feel that way too! So why don't you leave us alone? (If you hadn't noticed its not 1992 and nobody is trying to teach your kids abstinence-only education anymore.)

In suburban Ohio public school, I was taught abstinence-only education in 2013. Could have changed since then though

The problem in college is bad, but the problem is some high schools is even worse. At high schools without block scheduling, every day might be a 6 am alarm to get to school by 7:00.

> they are very likely to grow more slowly than average (i.e., revert to the mean)

I mostly agree with you, but this is basically the gambler's fallacy.

If I'm flipping a coin every second for days, and I hit a run of 10 heads in a row, "reversion to the mean" just means that the next 10 flips are likely to be less extreme than the previous 10. It does not mean that I should expect "more tails than usual" for the next flips. We revert towards the mean, not past it.

macmccann · 8 years ago
This is the definition of the gambler's fallacy. However, if you look at a chart of the stock market vs. a chart of a coin being flipped many times, they will look very different. While a coin being flipped will either asymptotically trend towards zero or a positive slope of .5 depending upon how it is charted, the stock market will have large peaks and valleys, meaning that after a period of high growth (overvaluation), the market will not continue to value these stocks at a steady growth of 10% per year. Instead, the market will correct the value of these stocks, which looks like a short term undervaluation and so we should expect "more tails than usual".
