lsseckman commented on Pyth project could open up decentralized trading and lending, supporters say   wsj.com/articles/why-the-... · Posted by u/jbredeche

Ok, I've changed the title from the rather generic and baity article title, to its subtitle. But an article being about a project and its supporters doesn't make it bad for HN. Often such articles contain interesting things. (I haven't read this article.)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I'll express a counterpoint - viewing the same situation through a different lens.

Put simply, the Chinese understand why American companies outsource their labor to China. Chinese labor is cheaper, and they are under no illusions - this outsourcing means that their own country experiences many of the negative externalities of Western consumption, including pollution.

It's fair for American businesses to distrust Chinese companies and distrust the Chinese government, but can't we all agree that they brought it on themselves?

Which multinational corporation reasonably expects that the Chinese government cares about their bottom line at all? And why do many ordinary Americans experience such outrage on behalf of these multinationals? Of course, I understand why their shareholders (and thus, many Americans) may be upset.

If anything, I'm angry they jumped at the opportunity to eradicate their domestic workforce to a point where China has the opportunity to steal in the first place.

These are companies we all helped build in one way or another.

Their revenues boost our economy and pay for a lot of our govt services

While content sites are not doing well, live cams have nowadays quite a high turnover. However all you said regarding merchants and banks is still an issue, payment processors get quite a large chunk of the pie. I’d also add Epoch to the dominant billers besides CCBill.

Hopefully the crypto world will mature in the upcoming years and people will use it for payments. That would help customers stay anonymous and there will be no charge-backs. Sure, we will miss recurring payments but still a win imo.

you *could do recurring payments on Ethereum

Anyone else suspicious that Zuckerberg may be gearing FB to ban the analytic tools of his competition if/when he runs? If Zuckerberg does run, I wonder to what extent FB will be his personal tool? Could you imagine if an old school news paper baron ran for president and his journalists always wrote in his favor?

right, but the point is that those products won't maintain the company valuation.

lots of people have heard about AIM, but it didn't save AOL

These valuations aren't necessarily just a bet on advertising as we know or imagine it. At least for FB and Google, the assets that give them power to direct attention to ads can potentially be monetized in other ways if ads stop being the most lucrative.

And conversely, if you don't own an asset that redirects a massive amount of attention, you can't launch any kind of product without getting help from someone who does (whether you call that help advertising or not).

If Google's asset was so powerful you'd think their other products would be doing better. (google+, glass, Allo, etc)

I once met an ex-apple engineer who created a hat that would read your thoughts and play the song you were thinking about. It only worked for certain people and had a limited playlist to choose from but it was really cool watching your "brainwaves" on a screen and then thinking "Daft Punk Get Lucky" and having it play on the speakers.
