Imagine if we had dedicated lanes for giant Waymos, that could hold dozens of people. The future of transport.
lotsofpulp · a day ago
One of the big, big advantages of Waymo is not being in a car with a stranger. I know quite a few women who don’t mind paying extra for Waymo over Uber/Lyft.

Far more people might able to afford a Waymo than a personal (in person) chauffeur.

Just a sign that profits aren’t being sufficiently taxed if $40b are trivially available for a billionaires pet project.
lotsofpulp · 2 days ago
If a business spends $40B to try to develop a new line if business, that is a business expense. If you are claiming that Meta’s R&D for virtual reality was not a legitimate business expense, but purely for Zuckerberg’s personal satisfaction, then good luck proving that.

Or are you arguing for a tax on revenue, instead of profit?

>are trivially available for a billionaires pet project.

What could this even mean? That it is trivial to become a majority owner of a business with enough cash flow to be able to spend $40B on R&D? If so, then you we live in different universes.

I think they paid taxes and I think they are too low.
lotsofpulp · 3 days ago
Based on the fact that Meta was able to spend $x money on developing VR?

Seems like pretty arbitrary and baseless reasoning to conclude taxes liabilities were too low.

Pro-tip: don't write the summary at all until you need it for evidence. Store the call audio at 24Kb/s Opus - that's 180KB per minute. After a year or whatever, delete the oldest audio.

There, I've saved you more millions.

The summaries can help automate performance evaluation. If the employee disputes it, I imagine they pull up the audio to confirm.

This is also why I went into the Philosophy major - knowing how to learn and how to understand is incredibly valuable.

Unfortunately in my experience, many, many people do not see it that way. It's very common for folks to think of philosophy as "not useful / not practical".

Many people hear the word "philosophy" and mentally picture "two dudes on a couch recording a silly podcast", and not "investigative knowledge and in-depth context-sensitive learning, applied to a non-trivial problem".

It came up constantly in my early career, trying to explain to folks, "no, I actually can produce good working software and am reasonably good at it, please don't hyper-focus on the philosophy major, I promise I won't quote Scanlon to you all day."

How people see it is based on the probability of any philosophy major producing good working software, not you being able to produce good working software.

You don't think those employees and vendors' employees and/or vendors' shareholders paid taxes on their income, capital gains, and/or dividends?

Smaller phones tend to have a lower price point.

If they don't offer a smaller phone, you'll eventually buy a bigger phone. Once you are in camp big phone, you'll probably be back on the 2-5 year device treadmill. And you'll be spending more on the big phones.

Apple is in a continuous state of not giving their customers what they want.

A convertible Macbook with a touch screen and dual MacOS/IOS personalities would sell out. They will never make it because no one will ever buy an iPad again.

A high quality TV with Apple TV built in at a premium but reasonable price would sell like hotcakes. It would compete with Apple Cinema displays, however.

A basic "good enough" 5 inch phone for $499 would also sell fast.

Apple won't do these things because you'd be happier but spend less.

With HDMI CEC controls, there is no benefit to anyone by combining Apple TV with a display. Plus almost all displays support Airplay these days.

This was the iPhone SE sold for many years until Feb 2025. It started at $430. It’s unfortunate they got rid of it for a 6inch 16E, but it is pretty reasonable on price at $600.
