> there were already enough apps of that kind on their App Store

I’d love to see that. I’ve never heard of denial for that reason, and the App Store is certainly crowded in every category.

loganwedwards · 6 months ago
True story. I sub contracted with another agency for a new startup and we wanted to have a pre-release for a small audience and the app was outright rejected by Apple for this same reason. My final milestone for said agency was tied to releasing the app to the store… still salty (and wiser) about that.

My sister was part of an immunotherapy trial years back. She was given weeks to live; the trial gave us years. Tailored medicine is truly a marvel.
loganwedwards commented on Ask HN: What have you built with ESPHome, ESP8266 or similar hardware    · Posted by u/fdw

I have not built anything novel — just utilizing community projects have been a wonderful improvement at home: 1. Ratgdo for the garage door 2. Esphome EcoNet for my water heater 3. Off the shelf Sonoff switches for some holiday lighting.

All of this is tied with a bow via Home Assistant.

>Infrastructure in the USA is a nightmare and an absolute embarrassment

And in the US, that will never change. An example from 2023 (yes this year).

The State where I live has a law all road construction/repairs is suppose to allow for what here in the US is called a "Bike Path". That really means a 2 feet (2/3 meter) wide shoulder on each side of the road. It is delimited by white paint that will be allowed to fade. On this "path" is painted a bicycle every so often, that will also fade and never be maintained.

So, a road near where I live, a bridge was replaced. The Plans called for construction of this "path" to accommodate cycling on this road. Construction completed a week ago, no white line was even painted. The plans only mentioned it so construction would be allowed to start. Since it is complete, the excuse is "Oh we forgot".

This is in a State that is pushing Cycling as an alternative to Driving to work. So in the US, do not hold your breath, we will continue with doing all we can to increase the average global temperature until no one will be able to go outside in the deep South during the Summer.

One thing that happens when you learn to build web things using React before learning html, is that you don't care about links.

When I joined my team, all links were buttons, random elements, or <a> with onClick. Nobody complained, but that meant ctrl click was useless, right click did not give you the options you wanted.

This is the only thing I'm a dictator about. There is zero room for negotiation when it comes to links.

Good for you. Abusing anchor (or navigation) is also a flagrant disregard for impaired users (those that need accessibility tooling).
loganwedwards commented on Ask HN: My child was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder. What to do?    · Posted by u/nus07
loganwedwards · 3 years ago
Same boat here. When my 2nd child was around 5 was diagnosed with SPD (desires heavy input, sometimes auditory stimming) and autism. This is a journey and would recommend doing some reading. I can't recommend "The Power of Neurodiversity" by Armstrong enough to understand how every individual's mind works.

Each area (picky eating, social transitions) requires patience for incremental improvements. Also note that many of our social norms (at least in the USA) are not exactly fair to those neurodiverse individuals. Sometimes, self-awareness (when the child is older) will help as well.

Good luck and don't forget to love your child for who they are.

It's unfortunate - the issue is in the age of the internet people read news from many different sources. Subscribing to a single source just isn't worth it unless you are a truly regular reader.

I'm surprised there hasn't been some kind of payment aggregator for news - eg. pay some amount for articles from a number of different sources. I imagine there's some business reason that has prevented such a thing from being introduced.

loganwedwards · 3 years ago
Have you tried Blendle? It semi solves this problem with a “pay per article” model, usually around $.50 each.

Are you sure PWA doesn’t work on iOS? I remember installing websites as apps on my iPhone. According to this SO answer I think one can even make it full screen (with a workaround at least): https://stackoverflow.com/questions/53061258/pwa-not-opening...
loganwedwards · 3 years ago
I “installed” drop.com as a PWA on my iPhone. It gets full screen real estate and a launcher icon.

I have empathize with the author's plight, but I don't have much sympathy for him buying multiple coffee grinders and throwing them all out because he bought cheap ones.

> I can’t say the same about my coffee grinders. I use the plural because I’ve owned a lot of them, all bought in their original packaging and dead within a year. They’re good ones, supposedly, with burrs not blades, but they stop performing before long, ending their long journeys from overseas factories in unmarked graves in my local Montana landfill.

A Baratza encore will last literally forever, and if it doesn't, you can replace everything in it.

loganwedwards · 3 years ago
I have the exact same sentiment when it comes to the Baratza line of products. I have the Preciso, which is similar to the Encore. I have rebuilt parts of it twice and you could build a unit from parts if so desired. In fact, they should consider offering DIY editions ala Frame.work for enthusiasts.
