I have file A that's in two places and I run this.

I modify A_0. Does this modify A_1 as well or just kind of reify the new state of A_0 while leaving A_1 untouched?

lgdskhglsa · a year ago
He's using the "copy on write" feature of the file system. So it should leave A_1 untouched, creating a new copy for A_0's modifications. More info: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/foundation/file_sy...

I went to a 2016 NV caucus with my wife at a nearby elementary school. After an hour of waiting in line, we finally got inside and saw why it was taking so long. The volunteers were signing people in on ipads, and they had no idea how to use them. They were mostly older people and had trouble with the website. My wife and I literally took out our phones, copied the URL, and started signing people in with our personal phones. We processed people 4 to 1 compared to the actual volunteers. It's ridiculous how disorganized it was, and how unprepared the volunteers were. The ensuing chaos at the county and state conventions made me swear I wouldn't do anything with the NV Democratic Party again. I changed my registration and everything.

Then came Trump 2.0 and I swallowed my pride and decided I had to do something.

My wife and I volunteered to do outreach with the party. We showed up at a coffee shop and nobody was there. Eventually we saw someone who looked like they were volunteering too, and we asked if they were. They said yea and handed us some letters to sign saying like "Vote for Kamala because I am too". Again, really disorganized and disheartening to someone who actually wants to help. Who knows if those letters were even mailed.

If this is representative of the Democratic parties in other states, it's no wonder millions of people didn't show up to vote for Kamala.

As someone who worked for a major sports betting company, these are the things we built but only used if required by the country/state/tribe/whatever:

* Deposit limits, per day/week/etc to limit the damage someone could do and also to limit money laundering. This could be self imposed or regulator imposed.

* Withdrawal limits. This was mostly to limit money laundering.

* Wager limits, per event/day/etc

* Self exclusion for a certain time period or forever. This kept people from using our stuff to make bets based on our best efforts to identify them. Sometimes we had a government ID, sometimes we didn't.

* Other exclusions, i.e. blacklisting for things like not paying child support.

* Geofencing to prevent people from using our app outside of the legal jurisdictions. Also, geofencing to only allow people to register for our apps in certain locations, such as a casino. That could easily be extended to prevent people from using the apps outside of a casino, but I don't think that was required anywhere.

These things are technically possible and would greatly help if required globally, short of an outright ban.

I'm sure NPR does some good work, and while I believe it is biased, I've found it to be less biased than CNN or MSNBC. I don't understand why NPR objects to being labeled as either state funded or state affiliated. It was established by an act of Congress, for one thing, and according to its own website, and its own disclosures, it does depend on federal funding. And that figure is substantially more than the claimed 1%. The 1% funding figure is misleading because it implies that the only kind of state funding is that coming directly from the federal government. The figure is much higher when you consider indirect state funding, the fact of NPR taking in dues from affiliates that are substantially dependent on federal grants or state and local grants or money that comes from public schools and public universities, all of which are funded by or subsidized by government.

In addition to the 1% figure being a lie, the writer of this piece failed to disclose that he is literally an employee of NPR. I guess it wasn't difficult to find out, but still...

WBUR is an NPR station, not only is it not difficult to find out the writer is an employee of NPR, it's out in the open and advertised as such. Do writers need to disclose on every article that they're employees of the organization they're writing for?

I spent some time in Montana and was shocked to see how many businesses have "casinos" attached to them. I never got to look inside but I think these are basically a small room with a few slot machines. They were everywhere. For example, I ate at a chinese restaurant and there was a side room advertising poker and keno.

I came away feeling like there was a web that would catch every single person in the state who had a predilection for gambling addiction.

The weirdest sign I saw was attached to a gas station casino: "Weekly grand prize jackpot: $50." That was hard to parse coming from tech salaries that a $50 grand prize would motivate anyone.

Growing up in Las Vegas, it was common for me to see a slot machine room in grocery stores and gas stations. Most movie theaters, bowling alleys, restaurants, etc were in the casinos. I've known a few people with gambling addictions, and it's definitely not easy with slot machines every where you go. But the casinos pay the State's bills, so it's easy to see why regulation is hard to come by.
