I don’t support tariffs at all, but calling these people mentally ill is the wrong approach.

They’re not mentally ill, they’re obsessed with power. It’s dangerous to conflate the two.

I'm 100% onboard with the 'Lawrence of Arabia inspired Dune' theory but I think one of the cleverest things Herbert did with Dune is to introduce a 'visionary substance' (spice) into the otherwise austere Islamic-adjacent motif.

He not only shrouded the spice in ritual and religion (which isn't THAT suprising considering many human societies used visionary substsances, and Herbert was a child of the 1960s psychedelic culture too) but also give it a central place in the economy and functioning of the empire.

What if a visionary substance was the real deal that gave you insight and precognition? What a rebel leader took full advantage of such a substance? What if that was combined with religious fervour?

Dune is basically space war + outsider Messiah + Islam + psychedelics

6000 sounds like a lot, right?

But in context, crashing into glass buildings kills about 600 million birds a year.

Cats? About 2.4 BILLION bird kills a year.

Yet this doesn't account for the type of birds they are killing. I view milling a swallow different from killing some kind of large raptor or large bird. Those arent your window hitters. In fairness windmills also kill a lot of large birds. No tech is perfect.

> You think every single one of your coworkers "cause you pain and stress during code reviews"?

Yes, I have a right to have an opinion on how other people’s behaviors make me feel, and so long as I’m still functional at work it’s not a problem (and I am, I always put up a good face and don’t cause any drama, I will refactor my perfectly working PR 1000 times to make all the nitpickers happy). Fortunately “being functional” doesn’t require to answer their referral or Zoom request years later, the hell with that, why would I want those people in my life again.

I simply have no tolerance for most coworkers and managers, it is not that hard to believe and I know a lot of people who despise their coworkers, I am not a unicorn.

My spouse is pretty much the same and has her own small solo business because she couldn’t stand the 9 to 5.

My dad, a very wise man living in a different side of the world and the happiest person I know, decided in his 30s after a corporate stint that he couldn’t live his life being told what to do by managers and coworkers, and became entrepreneur. Clearly he had ups and downs, but he has always been very happy with the independence this choice afforded him.

I earn 7 figures a year through my job in Silicon Valley and so I am putting up with this fundamental pain until I have enough to withdraw, which should be soon!

Damn this is a bleak view of the world.

> Yes, I have a right to have an opinion on how other people’s behaviors make me feel,

how others act is outside your control. how you interpret and 'feel' is within your control, and quite empowering when you take the reins.

> and so long as I’m still functional at work it’s not a problem

But what about when you retire and carry this this forward, likely alone.

Sounds like you have 'good' problems. Good luck to you.

On the east coast we don’t need the government to control electricity prices. And our electricity is cheaper. Go figure.

Companies like Dominion Energy, Duke Energy, and Consolidated Edison are regulated by state utility commissions, same as in California.

Newsom vetoed the bill as a nod to his donors plain and simple. Same reason he just signed a bill allowing a specific customers at a single venue to be served alcohol later than 2 AM. Same reason he carved out a minimum wage exemption for Panera. Same reason he signed a bill to carve out a junk fee exemption specifically for restaurants.

He's just planning for a post-governor career.

ldbooth · a year ago
Same reason the governor appointed public utility commission has allowed PG&E to raise rates 4 times in a single year without legitimate oversight. Yea unfortunately all roads point to his donors with this smooth talker, cost of living be damned.
