And now they're forced to serve up some of their awake time to artists
lc9er · 5 days ago
What fraction of that time goes to subsidizing the exponentially wealthier? We could just tax the hell out of the rich and and make better lives for the vast majority of us, while wealth hoarders still get to “win” at the game of life.

You’re advocating for coercion.

No. It’s accountability. There’s a reason real LEO have to identify themselves. You seem to be ok with having a secret police.

This has now been flagged twice today when it has a legitimate tech/privacy angle. Unbelievable.

I am regularly reminded that this site is filled not just with tech enthusiasts, but bootlickers that would do the dirty work of Zuck, Musk, and the current administration, all for a pat on the head and a few crumbs off the fascist plate.

People want to know the identity of law enforcement to dox them. Police, federal agents, lawyers, and judges can be pressured by criminals and organized crime. That’s a thing, you know that right?
lc9er · 24 days ago
Then don’t be a cop, if you’re too scared. Law enforcement barely has any accountability as it is. Legit LEO do not hide their identity because they are accountable to the population they serve.
lc9er commented on All AI Videos Are Harmful (2025)   idiallo.com/blog/all-ai-v... · Posted by u/Brajeshwar

99% of everything is bad, so that unsurprisingly includes AI videos.

But i've seen several good videos made using AI, including pretty much everything NeuralViz[0] on YouTube makes, but also some that have been posted in older comments here in HN. Igorrr's ADHD music video[1] was also made using AI and fit the music perfectly.

The common aspect with these "good" uses though is that they do not let the AI do 99% of the job (as mentioned in another comment) but they still involve editing, writing/scripting, acting (NeuralViz for example uses his webcam to act both the motion and voice in his videos and uses AI to change them) and to some extent leaning into the "weirdness" that AI videos have instead of ignoring it.

[0] https://www.youtube.com/@NeuralViz (i high recommend watching them in upload order because they all build into the same "universe" and often make references to older videos)

I love Igorrr, but still have mixed feelings about the AI-assisted video. They were capable of making videos weird and unhinged in the past without its use.

Expecting the Perl community, with it's TMTOWTDI (There's More than One Way to Do It) ethos, to come together and be the drivers of the next version.
lc9er commented on US moves to cancel one of the largest solar farms   ft.com/content/7a3cd922-8... · Posted by u/doener
anon291 · 4 months ago
Solar may be intermittent but tons of electrical usage can be made intermittent thus freeing capacity for non intermittent uses. I'm so tired of these arguments.

Trump claims to want to bring back manufacturing. Manufacturing is material inputs plus labor or automation. American labor is expensive. The only way to compete is automation.

Time and time again studies show that energy cost is the main determinant of factory output and manufacturing capacity. Cheap energy equals more stuff. That's basically it. Anyone who is canceling energy projects is not brining back manufacturing.

> Trump claims

It’s safe at this point to always assume the opposite of what he claims. Seems pretty clear he and his cohorts are going to cancel everything, funnel money into their pockets, then buy up everything for pennies on the dollar. Everyone in the US, and perhaps globally, will suffer while they create an ultra-corrupt New Gilded Age that makes the first one look like amateur hour.

lc9er commented on Baseball durations after the pitch clock   leancrew.com/all-this/202... · Posted by u/zdw
oldandboring · 4 months ago
The pitch clock is undoubtedly the most impactful of the changes made recently to speed up the game. However, other changes were implemented alongside it that have contributed in meaningful ways:

- Limit on the number of times per plate appearance a pitcher can "disengage" by stepping off/calling time or making a pickoff move.

- Limit on the number of times per plate appearance a batter can "disengage" by stepping out/calling time.

- Minimum of 3 batters must be faced by an incoming relief pitcher (or must finish the half-inning)

- Limit on the number of mound visits per game

- Larger bases

- Elimination (mostly) of the defensive "shift"

- Team at bat starts with an automatic "ghost" runner on 2nd base in extra innings

I like the 1, 2, and 4 changes. My feelings about 3 and 6 are mixed. Absolutely dislike the last.

Digg failed because they weren't listening to what the users wanted. Reddit has been doing the same thing for a long time, and there's a large number of people looking for somewhere to migrate to. It'd be hilarious if New Digg becomes that, but I'm feeling pretty skeptical that New Digg is going to be any better. What little I've seen about New Digg talks about crypto, AI, and "Gems" you can earn which is far from a good sign.
lc9er · 6 months ago
I’m not sure that Reddit doing the same thing is a big a problem as random acts of admin overreach and the looming threat of old Reddit going away. The moment that happens, I’m done with the service. New Reddit is a prime example of enshittification.
