laurels-marts commented on 90M people. 118 hours of silence. One nation erased from the internet   state-of-iranblackout.whi... · Posted by u/silencednetizen

Think what's going on in Iran is very sad, but from an outsider America has become one mouthpiece, rarely do I see dissenting voices in the media, that is its always Iran/China bad and at the same time they Kidnap a foreign leader and its all wow look how great we are.

does feel its back to might is right, and the last 80 years of relative peaceful times is sunsetting.

you may ask what has the above goto do with a tech article on Iran blocking the internet, its basically just how its written feels alot like propaganda (not saying the content is invalid) that is, oh the indignity of not having internet for 118 hours, personally didn't have it for much of my childhood, the above is not to diminish the other sad loss of life which is obviously terrible just feels like even tech articles have become partisan.

It is funny to see how in one (IT) culture there is two narratives, often supported by same people:

1) Office is bad, people more productive working remote from their homes, and corporate C-levels issue and enforce RTO, which is silly and anti-productive.

2) All jokes about Zoom/Meet/Teams, with all these «Each meeting consists of “are you hear me?” questions», etc.

Maybe, I'm unique (I'm sure I'm not), but I was twice less productive at remote (when it was mandated by anti-COVID measures of my Government) and I've happily returned to office as soon as I was allowed to.

For me, there are multitude of reasons to want to go to office, including endless number of shelves I need to mount at home (it is easy to procrastinate when you have OTHER real things to do, like home improvement, and not only meme-scrolling), mental resource to prepare one more meal each day (I have canteen at the office and lunch becomes no-brainer and takes 15-20 minutes instead of additional shopping & cooking at home), etc.

But main and most important reason is, personal meetings and, yes, this proverbial cooler chats. I'm 10x more effective in communication in person than all these videocalls. I dread planned calls, I cannot «read» counterparts well via videocall and it takes me much more time to explain ideas, problems and opinions via any remote communication. Also, a lot of «small» questions are postponed indefinitely because there is no this cooler, when you can ask somebody opinion or bounce off half-backed ideas against your colleague without scheduling yet another meeting and WITHOUT throwing your colleague out of the flow (because you know that he leaved flow to drink some tea already!).

I'm glad, that I can visit office every day, but also I'm glad that I can WFH for one day if I needed to (for example, when I need to meet plumber or alike).

Yes, there is commuting, but my commute is 15-20 minutes one way :-)

You’re not alone. I absolutely love going to office every day but also love the flexibility to occasionally wfh if needed. I just feel like when I enter the office and put on my “unreachable” focus mode on I’m in the zone and very productive. At home there’s endless distractions (my cats make sure to check in with me every time get too focused). Also I do like interacting with colleagues. I think I started liking going to office even more once I broke up with my gf that was living with me for 4 years. Something about working the entire day from my apartment completely alone is… not appealing to my social side of the brain.

Sports. I do 2h of strength training every Mon/Wed/Fri. You work with barbell, not machines. Requires all your mental and physical focus. That pretty much will soak up any “free” after-work time you have on those days. Then on Tue/Thu you can do social activities. Any time spent not working/sport/social activities I spend “whatever” which means watching a show, reading a book or doom scrolling - but it won’t a lot of time left for it. And honestly at that point you probably have a pretty well balanced life that “doom scrolling” is not an issue.

Idk about Theo Von, but Rogan put his thumb on the scale when he refused to interview Harris even though he interviewed Trump.

Why spread misinformation?

Probably gonna upgrade from my iPhone 11 to a 16 Pro, seems like a good time to make the jump (also I'd need a battery replacement anyway and I rather spend that money on the new phone)

iPhone XS Max here. I'm tempted this year.

Magnesium L-Threonate - has the most potent therapeutical effect because it can effortlessly cross blood-brain barrier. The drawback is that some people are sensitive to this form of magnesium, those people can have nausea, vomit, migraines, etc. IMHO, I would advise against everyday use because this form is more a medication than a supplement. It is used for serious conditions like dementia, neurological impairment, nutrimental deficiencies.

Magnesium Taurate - a combination of magnesium and taurine. A good form for people with metabolic conditions: T1DM, T2DM, hyperlipidemia, vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Magnesium Glycinate (aka Magnesium Bisglycinate) - a bit less potent form of magnesium, but has good bioavailability, fewer side-effects. This form is also a source of glycine which is an important amino acid beneficial for metabolism, has a mild calming and stabilizing effect on nervous system. Helps to cope with anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia.

Magnesium Citrate - a cheaper but ok magnesium form for everyday use.

Magnesium Oxide - the cheapest and the least efficient form of magnesium. Unfortunately, this is the most widespread form in many countries due to its low price. Try to avoid this form if you have a choice.

Bonus point: if you have a specific condition, you can combine several forms of magnesium to reach multiple therapeutic goals. For example, some popular combinations are presented below:

  a. Magnesium Taurate + Magnesium Glycinate
  b. Magnesium L-Threonate + Magnesium Taurate
  c. Magnesium L-Threonate + Magnesium Taurate + Magnesium Glycinate

I have been taking 300mg of Magnesium Bisglycinate 30 mins before sleep for the past 5 months or so. I have anxiety which can lead to insomnia. It has been a great help.

Yep I’m never doing online dating again.

Totally not something I want as part of my life.

What sort of mating strategy are you optimizing for?

It could be that you have an anxiety disorder, obsessive personality disorder or OCD. Or perhaps not, but the obvious red flag is trouble sleeping. If you’re typically a good sleeper but find yourself sleepless when in one of your spirals it's a good indicator that you need to take a step back, take a deep breath and reset your mental state because its not the refactoring thats not letting you sleep its all the stuff that you have built up in your head.

Also complete rewrites in general are overwhelming and tend to turn out not the way you imagined anyway. Small incremental improvements and isolated refactors over a sustained period of time yield the best results.

laurels-marts commented on DuckDB Doesn't Need Data to Be a Database   nikolasgoebel.com/2024/05... · Posted by u/tosh
youngbum · 2 years ago
This is the exact reason we applied duckdb and duckdb-wasm into our service.

Our team is currently building a form builder SaaS. Most forms have responses under 1,000, but some of them would have more than 50,000 responses.

So, when user tries to explore through all responses in our “response sheet” feature, usually they could be loaded via infinite scrolling (load as they scroll).

This uses up to 100MB of network in total if they had to get object arrays of 50,000 rows of data with 50 columns.

That was where duckdb kicked in : just store the responses into S3 as parquet file(in our case Cloudflare R2).

Then, load the whole file into duckdb-wasm into client. So when you scroll through sheet, instead of getting rows from server, you query rows from local db.

This made our sheet feature very efficient and consistent in terms of their speed and memory usage.

If network speed and memory is your bottle neck when loading “medium” data into your client, you definitely should give it a try.

PS. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

PS. Our service is called Walla, check it out at https://home.walla.my/en

So you have duckdb running on the server (e.g. node.js) and duckdb-wasm running on the client? Or are you hitting S3 directly with duckdb-wasm?
