kryptoncalm commented on Europe is scaling back GDPR and relaxing AI laws   theverge.com/news/823750/... · Posted by u/ksec

The biggest hurdle Europe has to face is the cultural shift away from the post-soviet era of "Don't take work too seriously, enjoy life".

There is now a full generation of Europeans who grew up in with this mentality, looking down on Americans for their ridiculous work ethic and comparatively meager benefits.

But it's not sustainable, and the strain is already becoming obvious. Young Europeans will have to work longer and harder for less if they want to move Europe away from being totally dependent on American tech, American defense, and Chinese wares.

The data [0] begs to differ: in richer countries workers and fewer hours. The gap not shown here is working hours per capita (instead of worker), but I couldn’t find that data quickly.

Also, even if your claim were true, I wonder if joining the rate race of working harder is worth it.

kryptoncalm commented on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70   telegraph.co.uk/world-new... · Posted by u/wslh
deanc · 7 months ago
I’m not sure how I feel about this. I’m based in the Nordics and my estimated retirement age at the moment (where I can get my state pension) is 67y 4m. Whilst I understand the burden the aging population is having on society (lifespan) it doesn’t seem like there’s much proactive government input into people’s healthspan.

Maybe instead we should try investing in this area (reducing the burden on services) instead of simply trying to reduce the quantity of folks claiming from the state pension pot.

Building on that, instead of viewing retirement (age) from a cost perspective (i.e. we have x budget and y lifespan, hence retirement age is z), it would be refreshing to see a high-quality and long retirement as starting point, and then figure out how to organize for that. One way would be to reduce burden on services indeed. A low retirement age (for those who want it) is a sign of a wealthy nation and something to strive for.

Most relevant part: “By applying a total of 950 square meters of AeroSHARK riblet film to the fuselage and engine nacelle surfaces of a Boeing 777, fuel savings of approximately 1.1 percent can be achieved.”

Guys what are your favourite smart plug? I need one with easy integration with grafana, not sucking, and shipment to EU country?
kryptoncalm · 2 years ago
I have two plugs in use that ship to EU (at least NL) and are made (or at least certified) in the EU. The latter matters to me because of fire hazards etc (e.g. [1]). Both can handle 16A and connect over zigbee which helps to reduce idle power consumption. 1. Innr plugs, e.g. SP240 https://www.innr.com/en/product/innr-smart-plug-eu-with-powe... 2. Robb zigbee smart plug https://www.robbshop.nl/robb-smarrt-slimme-stekker-zigbee-36...

ATHOM plugs are very nice, you can order one with ESPHome or Tasomata firmware preinstalled and they can ship from Germany https://www.athom.tech/

Note this vendor is different than the Athom company making the Homey smart hub: https://homey.app/
kryptoncalm commented on "Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection" Leaks DNS Queries to Apple   community.cloudflare.com/... · Posted by u/kryptoncalm

I noticed I couldn't reach my home servers which use split dns resolution, and it turns out that's because iOS 17 routes DNS queries via Apple DNS servers when using 'Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection'.

Good to know

* when setting up home networks or

* you want to use DNS for content filtering or

* you prefer your DNS queries to stay private

kryptoncalm commented on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)   solar.lowtechmagazine.com... · Posted by u/danradunchev

I used to think that as long as all you needed to do was some web browsing that older or underspeced machines were fine. But in the last few years websites have become insanely resource intensive. Even using something as seemingly simple as Gmail is a frustrating experience on older laptops (speaking as someone who just upgraded from a 2017 dual core MacBook Pro). I also have a hard time believing that the same hardware could handle that task much better if it used some lightweight linux distro. The browser engines are the same after all. You could swap Gmail for a lightweight email client, but I find that this approach of choosing software compatible with a capabilities of these low powered machines runs into some limitations sooner or later, e.g. when someone decides to sends you a Microsoft Office file, asks you to collaborate on a Google doc, insists on doing a meeting via Google Meet or Zoom. I may also want some of the other amenities modern laptops have to offer, like bright screens, long lasting batteries, the possibility of using a modern IDE or IDE like editor instead of having to learn VIM.

I have the same problem on my 2015 Macbook Pro, I can do all usual work I want, but website are getting slower and slower burdened by heaps of JavaScript, autoplaying video and what not. Sometimes I even have input lag when typing in a search bar(!). The Ikea website is a good example of bloated website.

Adblock only helps a bit, and most websites don't work without javascript.
